Out of Control Hobby
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:13:57 AM »
My obsession for tropical fruit tree is getting out of control. I bought eight plants the last few days. Two sugar apple (kampong mauve), two cherimoya (vietnamese, big sister), sapodilla (alano), atemoya (genova red), persimmon, and star fruit ( sri kembangan). And I still have the itch to get more.

Been there, done that. I have probably bought at least 80 trees this year so far. Believe me, you will keep buying until you run out of space. We are all plant hoarders.
By th way, my friend, where did you get your trees? The Atemoya and Big sister cherimoya are pretty interesting.

Genova Red is an Ilama, not an atemoya.

Rob,

I bought the infamous Genova Red from Roger Meyer thinking it's a ilama. Didn't read the whole tag, saw Genova Red and assume it a ilama. But it's just an atemoya, he calling it Genova Red atemoya. The leafs doesn't look like ilama but just a regular atemoya.

Pretty much everyone in this forum has had this problem. It can turn into an addiction quickly. I've spent the last week in a conference in San Diego and even so couldn't hold back on buying some plants over here. Now I have to worry about how to get them on the plane tonight!

Such are our lives...

Nice looking trees.

Did the nursery label the Genova Red as an atemoya? If so, someone should correct them.

mrradtech nie trees, do you have any mangos? I've had the same problem with Exocita. They mislabeled an ilama and a guava. It turn out to be a Lisa atemoya and a very good tasting white guava.

The standing joke at my house is me telling my wife that I'm off to buy more dirt.
I don't bet on sports, don't bet on the ponies and I don't go to the local Indian casinos.
This hobby can't be too out of control if it keeps you close to home.

haha. Very true  :) .

I have a thing for 7gal and up mango (good or > cv of course) trees thats been needing a pot up some months back and looks beaten up with lack of space and well water. It dosen't hurt knowing that they would more than likely fruit sooner than the 3gal  ;) . But there is something to it when I bring em home, root prune and branch shape, stick em in the ground, give em chemical love (fertz and micro) and witnessing them come alive in the following months. It's a very satisfying feeling to me.
The Earth laughs in flowers. And bear gifts through fruits.
No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

The Genova Red that Roger Meyer passes around is an atemoya, not the Genova Red ilama as many would expect.

I think this was discussed in another thread a few months back. Roger Meyer thinks he has the Genova Red when in reality he has some other tree that is not Genova Red. Genova Red is an ilama. It is NOT an atemoya. He thought he got Genova Red budwood from Florida, when he actually he got some other atemoya.

mrradtech,

the grafted genova red will be one you must add to your collection.

its a bit hard to find them because over the years the cold keeps killing them!

few growers have kept this gem alive and well.

Hope you get a nice one, for cheap....soon!

best of luck!

Mrradtech, the Kampong Mauve fruit doesn't look like a KM, it's green. A KM fruit starts with speckles of purple and at the size of the one in the picture, it should be completely greyish like one of mine below (size is about 2/3 of a tennis ball):

You bought the majority of those at Mimosa? You must have spent quiet a load of $ for your trees! Why didn't you get a wax apple tree?

mrradtech,

Don't feel like its out of control yet, your garden looks organized and not crowded yet... Still have about a year or so to go with another 40 plants added lol.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I didn't know the Genova Red was mislabeled until I planted it in the ground and did research on the internet. It's just a regular green atemoya of unknown variety. I'm still looking to add any true ilama to my collection. I bought two sugar apple from Mimosa nursery, one label kampong mauve and one with just pine island nursery. The tree with one fruit on it is not label KM but just Pine island tag. The owner at Mimosa said they both KM from pine island. I starting to doubt it's a KM after doing research on the Internet. I'm just happy to have any sugar apple that have a fruit set. The tree with KM label tag have no fruit set on it yet, hoping it turn out to KM. My collection is just getting started, it will be a crowded yard soon.
