California sub-tropical garden photos
« on: December 18, 2012, 08:34:00 PM »
Here are a few of my plants that have been doing pretty good through our winters, except for the Cacao which I bring in on colder nights. I have about 12 different mangos, a nice Kampong Mauve with 3 decent fruits. Also, more plants and trees then I have room for.
December 2012

"Golden Nugget" Jackfruit. This one I believe is pretty cold hardy. The Mai 2 next to it bit the dust last winter.

"Brewster" Lychee

Everbearing Suriname cherry, non stop for a year and a half.

Yellow Jaboticaba

"Biew Kiew" Longan

Pair of Imbes. One grew like a vine, and the other just spread out low. Have had flowers but no set, I have another one in a pot that I think is female. Has anyone grafted a female over to a male?

"Alano" Sapodilla. I bought this from "Frankies" in Hawaii in 2007, it was just a 1 foot tall graft when I brought it over. Once in the ground it has taken off.

Pitomba

Red Custard Apple, this tree has a lot of flowers and a few small fruit have recently set.

Green Sapote "Makawao"

"Red Lady" Papaya

Red Jaboticaba

"Paulista" Jaboticaba

Santol, this has been outside all year round for 2 winters and has never had any problems. Maybe some fruit one day.

"Farwell Ranch" Lychee that won't grow tall, but spreads a bit.

April 2014
Here are some of the same trees after a year and 3 months. Some have been pruned to get more light to the inside.

"Alano" Sapodilla

Imbes

"Pickering"

"Makawao" Green Sapote

"Everbearing" Pitanga

"Biew Kiew" Longan

Yellow Jaboticaba

"San Pedro, Kimber Red and Green Cocktail" Custard Apple

Farwell Ranch Lychee

Pitomba

"Red" Jaboticaba

Brewster Lychee

"Red Lady" Papaya

"Golden Crunch" Jackfruit

"Paulista" Jaboticaba

Mangosteen of course in the greenhouse over the winter.

Great Collection Marklee... :)

Have you had any fruit on your longan yet? How old is the tree?

The Longan has been in the ground about 2 years, and flowered this last summer but didn't set any fruit. I'm not sure how old the airlayer is, but it is always growing.

It is a seedling I brought back from Brazil about 7 years ago. They taste pretty good if they are completely ripe and fall off with a slight touch. Sure I can trade seeds anytime, they are all over the place. Let me know

Marklee very impressive collection. I was mostly impressed with your Mamey, Sapodilla, and the Annonas. Well done in SoCal.

Where did you get your Jackfruit tree at? Actually where did you get most of your tropical trees at?

I got most of the trees and the Jackfruit from Ong Nursery in San Diego here. Some of the others from the old Pacific tree nursery here, some from seed, grafting, marcotting etc., some from Montoso gardens online, others from Top Tropicals.

Awesome collection and great looking trees, Marklee!
I wish i had a open yard like yours and I can plant all my trees out! I am interested in some seeds of the surinam cherry and bud woods of the Pantinn Mammey and Lisa atemoya; is it possible to buy some from you? I am in Socal as well, Corona exactly. Thanks for sharing the inspring pictures.

Would be interested in trading for seeds sometime, looks like a winner for SoCal.

Hi, congratulations, very nice.

I am wondering about the "Everbearing Suriname cherry", was it bearing fruit even on winter? how cold do you get on winter?

I am not sure when the Makawao was grafted. It came from Pine Island probably, and has been in the ground 2 years.

The Suriname bears all through winter, and last year we got down to 38F.

Dave, the curry trees are from seed and are probably 6 years old. I have kept them pretty small, but they have done real good.

Super-looking collection, Mark. Thanks for sharing!

The Imbe look great. They have such an odd appearance. I also have a few, smaller than yours, though. They haven't flowered yet, so no idea what sex they are.

How old are your yellow jabos? I thought mine would flower this year, but don't think they will.

Marklee...
You've had flowers already so fruit is soon to follow.. My longan is just about a year and a half old, and still in a pot as i'm afraid to put it out because of the frosts we get here...

Good luck with your trees.. :)

Jaime,
The imbes are about 7 years old, and one that I gave my friend from the same batch set fruit 2 years ago with out another Imbe within at least 15 miles. The Yellow Jaboticaba is about 6or 7 years old, I got it from Montoso. It really took off in the ground. Hopefully the fruit will set this time around.
