We would like to introduce ourselves. We are Walter and Verna Zill. We are a family owned and operated mango orchard that was established in1955. Located east of I-95 in Boynton Beach, this planting of mangos dating from 1955 is close enough to the ocean to benefit from good air circulation which minimizes the effects of fungus, so we omit fungicides, as well as insecticides. Often the bloom and fruit is adversely affected by organisms we don't counteract so we are thankful for what sets and matures when freezes, thunderstorms, & hurricanes permit us to have a harvest.
Most of our fruit is sold as fully mature, meaning that it is nearly ripe on the tree. Some late maturing varieties (Keitt, Kent, for example) must be picked before showing signs of ripeness due to how they ripen from the seed and often spoil internally if left too long on the tree. Many varieties are picked as they turn ripe color on the tree, and these fruit are in high demand because they are at their peak of flavor potential. All are handled carefully to prevent bruising, using bamboo poles with bags attached to pick high hanging fruit to prevent damage from dropping .
Having experience with my father, Laurence H. Zill , 1913-2000, in the propagation of mango trees, where selecting superior varieties was continuous, I continue such efforts in the space available to me. Many of my trees are in various stages of being top worked to varieties that become available. This causes overall fruit production to be relatively low for the area involved, but it does provide a sampling of different textures and flavors in various sizes, shapes, and colors of mangos when they are available. Not all my trees are of productive size, and even when they grow large enough, they may not have fruit every year, or enough fruit to offer them for sale. I may choose to eliminate a variety to make space for another, so I only list those with fruit available this season, beginning with those that ripen first.
Our hours of operation are as follows:
Sunday through Thursday 7:00 am - 7:00 pm (daylight hours)
Friday 7:00 am - 5:00 pm (daylight hours)
Saturday ALWAYS CLOSED
Our prices:
Most picked mangoes - $2.00/pound We do sell some "special" varieties and some that are extremely limited in quantity or in high demand for $3.00/pound.
We sell drops and second for $1.00 - $1.50/pound.
We also sell grafted mango trees of selected varieties upon special request. We are not a nursery, we do not stock any plants for sale on the premises.

Welcome! Awesome selection you have there. :)
-
Would like to extend a welcome to you both. :) I've heard the name Zill for so long, that it's nice to see you've joined the forum, and can interact directly with fruit growers from around the whole world. I hope to visit one day.
-
Welcome ! ... Can't wait to visit !
Ed..
-
Welcome Zill's! happy to see you on the boards!
-
The Legendary Zills have arrived.
That in itself is awesome.
I'll be flying in from Bermuda next week. First stop: Zills.
Is there any info on Taralay, Seacrest, Fruit Punch? These are all new to me.
-
Future - those three mangoes you question are part of Zill breeding. Seacrest is a result of an Edward seedling. Fruit Punch is a seedlingof Zill 80, which is a seedling from Kent.
I will have to get back with you to confirm the parentage of Taralay.

Thank you. I also wonder if Zills has ever bred any polyembryonic mangoes. Simmonds in the only poly I've heard of that was the result of a deliberate breeding effort. I look forwarding to seeing you next Wednesday.
-
Only 1.2 mi. between Zills and Truly Tropical? Is this "mango heaven," or what!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks to the Zill family for the new varieties you have released. Sweet n Tart is very very good, then comes Lemon Zest. Both trees are producing good amounts. My Pina Colada tree has not produced representative mangoes yet. Last year it produced two that were bland and unimpressive but this can happen with a young tree. I have tasted some of the other new Zills too. Samples that were good.
-
Welcome Zills!
It's a real honor to have you on the boards.
-
I recently stopped by Walter's place and brought home a few mangoes, including Zinc, Val Carrie, Okrung, Lemon Zest, Coconut Cream, Dupius, Duncan and Seacrest. The Coconut Cream and Seacrest were beyond outstanding. Val Carrie and Dupius were excellent as well, but CC and Seacrest had something extra.
-
What can you tell me about Seacrest?
-
how would you describe valcarrie?
-
What can you tell me about Seacrest?
Seacrest is a seedling from Edward. It is hard for me to describe tastes and each persons taste are different. If you like Edward I would expect you would like Seacrest. Best thing for you to do is to try one. This is a variety that I have growing on my property however there are no plants for sale at this time.
-
how would you describe valcarrie?
Oh, it is hard for me to describe what a mango's tastes are as what my tastes may be may not be what another percieves. It has a bit of what some call spiciness and can be extremely sweet. It is one you should taste if you are considering purchasing a tree as it seems to be a mango that people love or hate.
-
how would you describe valcarrie?
I have heard the fruit is very good and that the tree has dwarf tendencies so good for cramped situations
-
The Seacrest, at least to me, is much better than Edward, which itself is a great mango. The Val Carrie is very rich in taste. Extremely sweet and a bit spicy as well. Anyone knows how productive Val Carrie is?

Do you sell Mahachanok?

Do you sell Mahachanok?
Unfortunately, we do not have any for sale this year. We have starts that were grafted onto our mature Keitts last year. While they are growing at a vigorous pace, it won't be until 2015 at the earliest that we may have any and would be very limited. I would be more comfortable saying we should have some available in 2016.
-
I stopped by Zill's a couple of days ago. The mangos are all amazing, and Verna was incredibly nice.
I got some Lemon Zest, Hatcher, Edgar and Orange Sherbert.
PS. BUY THE HONEY! (it is some of the best honey I've tasted)
-
Took a trip to Zill's today! Got 2 of every mango they had AND a jar of honey! What great people! Rob and his wife, Walter and his wife, I missed out of the fruit punch....... Maybe next year! Will be back soon! If you never been it's worth the trip from ANYWHERE!
-
Any mangos this weekend? If so which ones..............See you sunday morning
-

I will see you on July 8. Round 3 is on!
-
was excited when I saw this thread and thought I might be able to finally get some of those rare tasty mango varieties until I saw that you don't ship them :(
-
Have been there several times this season thanks to Robs recommendation to check you all out. Have sent several friends. Great people, mangoes are beautiful and well handled. Flavors have been from good to amazing!! Got the last guava (which I handed over to Rob lol) still waiting on a pineapple pleasure to ripen. What looks to be ready for tomorrow or Wednesday?
-
Fisherking i had 1 huge (3LB) Pineapple Pleasure purchased July 4th weekend from Zill I waited till it turned all yellow... the thing was remarkable. Texture was almost Gelly like around the seed area. Top 5 mango for me this year.
PPK , VALKYRIE ( at the Fruit n Spice Park .. ValCarrie , Orange Sherbert , Sweet tarts (from Squam and Zill ) , and Pinapple Pleasure. This is in no particular order .
Mike ..in AZ :)
-
The fact that Verna had to, one drop and one pick, and offered to only sell me one because she wanted to "enjoy the other" was hint enough to me that this is probably a pretty good mango LOL. Can't wait for it to be ready. I get to try probably at the same time Pineapple pleasure, orange sherbert, sweet tart and honey kiss all from Zills and should be able to try atleast one of each all in one day. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!

for the last couple of years, I have ordered many boxes of mangoes from this phenomenal supplier but unfortunately this year due to lower supply and time time availability, Walter was unable to ship to me.
If anyone is willing to buy some mangoes for me from here and ship them to me, I would be happy to pay you for your trouble.
Thanks!

Was there 2 days ago. They had randoms of taralay, good amounts of honey kiss, zills, hatcher and some random stragglers like pickering, taralay, a few duncans and keitts yet to come. I am sure the amounts have changed as I bought about 30 lbs worth lol and there were several people arriving as we left. Sadly the season there is coming to an end. Hope to make one more trip to stock up on whatever is left this week or next (hoping it won't be too late) Has been a great season of learning flavors and just eating plain delicious mangoes from there. Thank you Walter and Veran (and Rob)
-
I wish I would have know about your place a couple of weeks ago when I was in the area. Hope I can get over there before the end is season. I wish I knew a mango farm near me.
