Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Garcinia discussion thread

Most of the new world garcinias do well in South Florida
It seems like G. acuminata was a little cold sensitive though.

Since the old world ones are more likely to be dioecious I've kinda shied away.
I am growing dulcis though, those trees are 8 ft now, hoping for some flowers any day now

@op last I checked Achachairu doesn't have a species name but G. humilis is commonly thrown around.
People also just call it Bolivian mangosteen.
The first time I heard of achacha was from AUS marketing and that name seems to be used widely used as any other name

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How many people eat mango skin?
« on: August 10, 2023, 12:35:36 PM »
For fresh mango...I don't. But curried mango....yesss!!! I've been eating ripe sapodilla skins tho while enjoying the fruit though (Alano and Silas Woods).
Curried mango is good but I suspect the fibrous mangos are better to use in this situation.
I guess that is what gives it its texture.
When cooking green fiberless mangos (only did it two times) you seem to end up with a sauce.

Also just a word of wisdom
Taste the skin before cooking, SE Asian mango skin (I tried CAC and NDM) was pretty bitter and I ruined a whole batch of trini-style red pickles

Just wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone had luck bringing in some new stuff to the states.
I was hoping for Pinksblush but I think that might still be under some type of protection.

PM me if you got any leads

They are quite cold tolerant when big much more than jakfruit.Flavor is an explosion sweet and tart like fruit concentrate.
Do you find that the season varies between types?
My tree has been dropping fruit prematurely the last two years does age help?

60
They don't need to be hand pollinated in South East Florida at least

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Golden Annona - big disappointment
« on: August 04, 2023, 07:50:47 PM »
Look on the forum for Pond Apple, they smell wonderful but have no taste.  And that is being kind.

By the way not everything grafts well to pond apple.  There is a annona graft compatibility table floating around on the forum.  In my experience, Cherilata does well on pond apple.  Some say Ilama does to but not in my experience.

Yes this is correct, and variety of pond apple matters too.
There a lot of delayed incompatibility also.

Zhpp grafted reticulata to and I haven't seen a single sucker in the 3 years I've had it planted.

62
Agreed^

63
Added some annonas

I would agree with a lot of the comments on O-2/Peach Cobbler for all sellers I purchased from this season. The texture was a bit uneven throughout the fruits, one day too late and you'll have tons of soft spots. However, the flavor makes up for any inconsistencies in quality, sooooo good. I had one PC from Bill in Davie that sat on my counter for 8 days and was still fairly firm when eaten, I suppose picking time plays a big factor into that.

Although khan, I would personally disagree with the fruit being hard to peel, unless you meant right when picked off the tree. I found that after a few days, the skin was one of the easiest to peel right off and barely took any flesh with it. From peeling to cutting, tons of juice poured out as well @oolie and it was an absolutely remarkable taste.

Yeh the act of peeling itself is not bad, just the amount of mess it makes with all the juice.

Peach Cobbler? I finally got to eat one from member Khan. I had refrigerated this PC for the seed, which I was sending to California. That got delayed. So this PC fruit sat in my refrigerator 10 days. When I took it out of fridge to remove the seed, it was super mushy. I almost tossed it. But then I am trying some, and I wolfed it all down. Lots of nieuw Zill type of orange flavors. On the elite tier.

Glad you enjoyed it.
I'm torn between this mango.
The flavor has always been outstanding but it is hard to pick ripe and it's even harder to peel.
One redeeming quality I'm finding after a few years of fruiting is that the fruit seems to be pretty forgiving when picked on the earlier side.

I wanted to add to the thread that the Zinc i got from skhan were incredible; sweet, firm, and fiberless. I was unfamiliar with it until this season and was really surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Glad you enjoyed it, the last few from the tree started getting some carbonations going but without any extra funky flavors,
It was pretty interesting but the batch you got some fruit from was the prime flavor IMO

My tree fruits but drops it before is ready, gets to around a 1/2 in a circle.
It has been like this for the last two years, hoping it works it self out.

I might try reducing water.

72
Seen these in person.

Great deal, need to swing by and grab one or two next week.

Thanks for the kind words, you are welcome anytime

73
Governor's plum added.

I never had any luck germinating these, any tips?

74
They are grafted?

Nope
Red hybrids usually fruit between 3-5 years so I think in two years these should be fruiting

75
That's a great deal!

Thanks for the endorsement!!
