What's eating my Mulberry tree leaves?
« on: May 04, 2021, 05:51:27 PM »
I recently bought a small Mulberry tree from Al's Fruit Trees near Miami, don't know what type, but it's a dwarf that grows small, sweet fruit.

I soon discovered that a swarm of fat beetles, about 3/4" long, have been visiting every night to devour the leaves.  At some point at night, they seem to fall asleep, so I am able to knock them off the leaves into a bucket of soapy water or squish them on the ground without them flying away.  It is still potted, so I now move it into the garage at night.

What are they?
I don't want to spray the tree with fruit growing on it.  Will I have to fight them off forever, or are they just a spring/summer pest?

June beetles.  They are out every night for the past 2 weeks chewing my peach, plum, persimmon, and berries ' leaves.  I have been, for the last 4 years (late April-June), killing them every night. Spray with   Sevin ever 3 weeks will help, but I try not to spray any insecticide on my trees.

They really like my persimmons... I walk out at night with my flashlight and thump them off.

That could be Sri Lanken Root Weevils.  They love lychee leaves.  Check for small white beetles (google for a picture) at sunrise

If you don't like pesticides,  stay away from Sevin.  Its a nasty one.

I spray Sevin only  on my 2 plum trees whose battling with SHOTHOLE bacterial leaf disease for the past 2 seasons.   I do not want these leaf-eating beetles pass the disease on to my other fruit trees after they devoured the sick plum trees.
