My Papaya, born in Sardinia from Vietnamese seeds!.
« on: October 26, 2021, 11:30:26 AM »
Hello,
these are my first Papayas born in 2019 from Vietnamese seeds given to me by a friend, I first experimented in pots, keeping them in various environments, and after a year in pot, these two remained lower, I then planted them in the ground, and then between May and July 2021, I collected my first fruits, one of the two plants in my experimental small tropical garden, I don't know why, but it can't hold the fruit.

This is the flower of the plant that cannot hold the fruit, the small fruits grow a little and then fall ..

Your climate is at teh limit. They drop fruit because of cold nights.
A small greenhouse can help.
Good job !

, good taste but not very sweet.

The last pic shows the fruits in the bags, and the leaves don't look healthy, and this is the reason it was not sweet due to lack of healthy leaves to manufacture sugar. Also papaya don't like too much watering, and don't water next to the trunk to avoid trunk rotten.

Thank you very much Lebmung, yes I know I am at the limit, and that a greenhouse would help me, but I want to try to grow everything without winter protections, I’m not sure for cold nights, only one plant behaves like this, not holding the fruits, it does so from June 2020, the other plant that instead holds the fruits is different, has both flowers and fruits of different shapes.

Thanks Sapote,  yes I agree with you, the fruit is ripened in winter, I collected it at the end of May, the suffering plants in the photo you refer to, it was made the day immediately after the harvest of my first fruit, at the end of May… and you can see that the plants were still suffering after winter,  now they recovered a little bit, then I will post an updated photo ..
