Citrus General Discussion / Re: Tips for grafting kumquats?
« on: June 12, 2025, 01:33:22 PM »
I used an approach graft to replace my incompatible Kuharske rootstock with a Flying dragon roots for my Meiwa kumquat.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Meiwa scion died to graft point
« on: May 14, 2025, 05:16:48 PM »
I had a Meiwa kumquat that was grafted to Kuharske citrange.  The graft was slowly pulling apart so I planted a Flying dragon seedling along side.  I used an approach graft to fuse the 2, then remove the kuharske citrange.  It took 1.5 hears before the graft fully took and the tree is now doing very well.

The old trunk where the original rootstock connected.  It is mostly healed

New Zealand lemonade trees grow well on their own roots till the cool season, when root rot sets in. My personal experience.

Thanks for your tips, I'll be adding horse manure in a few weeks. I'm currently discussing this with a friend, his family owns a few horses in their farm.
As for my soil I haven't done a test, but in my area most of the soil is above 7 pH, so that's why I assumed it is alkaline. I haven't had too much trouble growing blueberries, as long as I give them a good source of iron (old rusty pieces of metal buried at the base of the plant seems to work). Maybe it would help citrus too?

I have a large non producing Fukushu kumquat low grafted to Flying dragon that I did some cold testing on outside.  I covered the pot as
well as the first 12 inches of trunk with leaves.  My goal is to get a strong single growth trunk that might produce fruit.
Thanks for the pictures! How much cold has it seen so far? That's an interesting strategy, it reminds me of the figs and pomegranates that fruit despite freezing to the ground in winter. Was that your inspiration?
The whole tree died including the flying dragon  rootstock.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: little US-852 seedlings surviving outside

Cincinnati Oh has not gone below 0 in 20+ years, US-852's limit.  It is  the desiccating LONG winter that kills them

Harvey lemon goes down to 10F.

I left 3 trees outside in the cold.  None of the citrus trees were hurt despite a lot of very new growth.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Effect of tree size/maturity on cold hardiness

I have a greenhouse that goes up in fall and taken down in spring.  It is impossible to winterize the trees in fall so they get treated as summer plants year around.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: How to select rootstock seedlings
« on: March 15, 2025, 12:10:50 AM »
I had a Fukushu kumquat seedling that ha a root with 420 degree loop that grew great.  It got to 10 feet tall with a heavily branched 5 foot diameter.  It was killed when a cold front dropped the temperatures down to -2F with highs of 7F

Some of those varieties will not survive zone 8a even with light protection.
