"Nelita" Starting To Ripen - Photo

My first "Nelita" is starting to ripen.
Right now it's a tomato red color.
Have no idea what the fully ripe color will be:



Anybody know what color a fully ripe one like this would be?

Looking great, Kevin. It appears that others get pretty dark crimson (darker than that).

I went ahead and wrapped a few of the ripening fruit to keep them away from the birds.
Even though they are in my greenhouse... the birds still find the ripe fruits if I'm not careful.

Picked a few of my ripe fruit from my Nelita seedling I acquired from Kevin earlier this year.  Man, these were absolutely delicious. Really sweet cherry flavor with a hint of tropical something on the backend.  And great size as well.  These could go head to head with American cherry and hold their own.

Good to hear! My fruiting E. calycina is very insipid. Nowhere near as tasty as my COTRG. I have some Nelita seedlings, but they're small plants. Hopefully they'll be tasty.

You've got me to wondering now about E. calycina (and also the cultivar, Nelita).  I bought a bunch of E. calcyna three years ago and they recently got moved up into 3gal pots and jumped up right away and have gotten bushy and are now about 2-1/2 ft tall.  (Haven't seen any flowers on 'em but my pitangatubas the same size have bloomed a little and set a couple fruit already.)

So . . . . Are there individuals of E. calcyna which produce tastier fruit and others that have not-so-tasty fruit, just like other kinds of fruit do?

Curious for input from other TFFers who've tried different E. calcyna . . .
