Need a Few Members for New Fig Trial --- CLOSED
« on: September 08, 2023, 07:47:55 PM »
Hi all,     ------------>  CLOSED  <------------------

I found a wild fig tree which has some very good tasting figs (in my opinion). I call it Betty#1, I would like to ask a handful of fig growers (not sellers) who would like to trial this fig cuttings I will send out to you. Since I'm in SoCal, I can't test this variety to determine if its common so I'm requesting anyone interested to contact me. I already have the cuttings now so you will need to root it or graft it now.

This is the same wild seedling tree figs I posted here 2 years ago. I now have it grafted on my trees, the fruits still taste very good so I wanted to see if it is a common fig.

Serious growers only. Here's my restrictions on this new seedling variety if you are picked for growing out the cuttings:

1. Must be an TFF forum member for minimum of 1 year.
2. You must update me on the growth progress every 6 months, and when it has the fruits.
3. You have no fig wasps in your location. Give my your address when you request the cuttings (2).
4. When you get fruits, please post here or send me a message to evaluate the taste and send photos of the fruit.
5. You can propagate this variety, but not sell any or give/share cuttings to others who might sell it without my permission.
6. You must not be a fig seller.
7. For people who live in lower 48 states only that allow fig cuttings to be shipped to them. No CA residence.
8. I have the right to refuse to send cuttings to anyone that request it.
9. You will get 2 cuttings for this trial.
10. Send me a message with your name & address, and I will notify you if you are selected.

=> Priority given to non-CA residents when I select who will get these. Only need 5-10 people to do this trial. Thanks, Kaz

If you are interested in doing this trail, please send me a message immediately today. I also posted this trial on the Ourfig forum and there are many members that have requested doing the trial.

I may have up to 15 orders (2 each) that I can send out next week so hurry and message me.

I can test it here in Seattle area, if you'd like. I have about 25 other varieties that I've also been testing for my climate.  I can post periodic updates on my YouTube channel.

Thanks!

Benjamin, sounds good, send me the request message, I should have your address.

Nate, if you don't have any fig wasp and I still have a few extras then I will send it to you.

I will test if you'll have me.  I have been recently thinking about trying to grow figs but I was overwhelmed by huge culture around them and got information overload.  I have no idea if fig wasps are native to Philadelphia area, and I have no desire to sell fig trees nor know anybody who does.

I assume they will fruit in a 20gal container?  And would be greenhoused in winter.

Ok, I will be closing this offer this weekend.

I have this open to other people in the Ourfigs.com group as well.

Here's the states of all the participants:
1. Houston, Texas
2. Canada
3. New York
4. Missouri
5. Washington
6. New Jersey
7. Mississippi
8. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
9. Collegeville, PA
10. Phoenix, Arizona
11. Louisiana
12. Bloomington, Illinois
13. Tampa, Florida
14. Humble Texas

If you are not in the states shown above, then you will have priority over other duplicate state members since I would like to see it grown in as many different location as possible.

I would be very surprised if that variety of fig will do well here in humid southeast USA with its big open eye and the way it doesn’t hang like some others. Even my Brown Turkey has issues here some years but that’s why you are doing a trial and looking forward to the grower’s experience with it.

Yes, correct. But maybe if the figs are not caprified it may not have the larger eye. I did see some fruits with closed eyes that were ripe, like the first photos above. I picked maybe 6 fruits and they all looked similar to the one I show in that photo with normal eye.

I did test the seeds on the ones that exploded, and they were caprified.

That makes sense. We don’t have the fig wasp here which is a good thing with the wet climate that we have this time of year. Does the caprified fruits have better flavor?

Yes, when the fig is caprified, it intensifies the sweetness. I don't think it changes the flavor much, just more sweet.

I will not ship out until 9/14, had to buy the small box (3"x3"x11") that I will use. It will get to me by 9/14. So, while I wait, I cut the Betty#1 figs and will be cleaning them again tomorrow, then wrap the cut ends with parafilm.

I will print out the mailing labels and take a photo to have each person confirm the address Tuesday-Wednesday. If you don't confirm you gave me the correct mailing address by end of Wednesday, 9/13, then you will be dropped from the list to trial (no excuses).

Here's the people that will be getting the Betty#1 for this trial. I'll take a few photos of the cuttings today and post since some of you wanted to see the size of the cuttings (1/4"-1/2"). You will get 2 cuttings each that can be rooted, and maybe an extra one (skinny) if there are some spares left.

Dang, bummer I missed this. Vegas is huge for hobbyist fig growing, myself included. Got about 15 varieties growing. Sadly no fig wasp, though we do have some folks that are doing manual pollination via caprifig harvesting.

Eager to see what the results of the testing are. We're always thirsty for more (potentially) common figs of high quality out here.

I'm curious, did you notice any significant fig drop of unripened fruit? That's usually the biggest indicator that it may not be common.

What's the flavor profile? I'm presuming based off of the size and coloration that it's a berry type and not sugar/honey?

Continuing my journey to disprove those who say "You can't grow that in the desert" since 2013.
