Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Fernandez Reticulata
« on: March 17, 2021, 09:07:42 PM »

I purchased this tree a few years ago from Lara farms and today I was able to try the Fernandez reticulata for the first time. For some reason I throw all sorts of pollen at this between itís own, atemoya, and sugar apple and yet nothing sticks and just by chance it set one fruit for the first time this year which I think it was self pollinatied 🙈😂. Iím mostly happy to see this had red flesh (and not mislabeled) because Iíve been using the pollen the past few years to cross with other annonas. From the pictures Iíve seen of named reticulatas it is the Fernandez with reddish flesh, and why I chose to use in my crossing to try and achieve a hybrid with red flesh. The flavor was not for me though and I hope if you are into reticulatas you can enjoy the pics at least 👍

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Polyphenol Tea
« on: November 21, 2020, 04:01:54 PM »
Hey Forum,

Many people grow tropical fruits for a variety of reasons and I think a common theme includes the need for nutritious food to support health and wellness. I realize that this is not directly tropical fruit related, but I still feel itís worth sharing. Recently I found this article that ranks sources of polyphenols based on content, the table in this article is very helpful What I find interesting is that the highest polyphenol rich sources are not fruits but herbs and spices! This was contrary to my thought of blueberries, blackberries red wine ect. Here is a recipe I put together based on the article that combines some polyphenol rich sources to make an herbal tea:

1 gallon water
3 star anise ďstarsĒ
2.5 oz cloves
1 cinnamon stick
Some fresh mint

Bring to a light boil for 15 minutes and done.

Came across this article which is paywalled....  But mentions mostly seedling lychees in Australian breeding program flowering after three years?!?!

Find this totally wild because from what I have heard is that it takes 15-20 years for a Lychee seedling to flower 🤷‍♂️

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potentially Huge News for Citrus
« on: July 10, 2020, 06:53:29 AM »
Hereís an article.....absent of any data, study design ect but purports to have found a cure for citrus greening and the rationale seems to make sense by isolating resistant genes of finger limes. I really hope this pans out and we can bring back citrus again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitangatuba vs Pitomb

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Making peace with the rabbits
« on: February 25, 2020, 09:05:51 AM »
I have had many young seedlings killed this year by rabbits that eat them in half, essentially cutting the young plant up to a pencil diameter in half, then usually the plant will die while a small very tiny amount come back via new shoots. There seems to be no discrimination as mango, jackfruit, salak, kwaimuk, annonas, white sapote, achacha, papaya have all fallen victim. I realize that this maybe is an eccentric fix but it seems to be working so far. Basically measured out 33in of chicken wire and zip tied to a 12in angled pvc pipe to keep the rabbits away from the seedlings until they are thick enough to not temp the rabbits. This or get a pet falcon I guess 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruiting Barbados Cherry from seed.
« on: February 22, 2020, 09:28:38 PM »
Hey Forum,

Have had Barbados cherry before and was unimpressed with the fruit, until today where the fruit I ate was delicious and sweet. Iím going to plant the few seeds I kept, but wondering how long it takes to fruit from seed? Have read many sources that say to propagate from cuttings as germination rates are low. Any experience with this is appreciated thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Mango leaves (CaC)
« on: November 16, 2019, 08:49:44 AM »
Have a bunch of mango seedlings from this years feeding that Iím evaluating and in particular I planted this seed from a CaC fruit I purchased from tropical acres.

What I like are the leaves are very dark green, sharp and pointy, are somewhat stiff/erect whereas most mangos the leaves flop over. My question to those growing the real Cac, can you post some pics off the leaves as a response? Tia.

This year was biggest crop off my coconut cream tree to date which is planted next to my ice cream mango tree. One of the fruits I picked off the coco cream was smaller and oddly shaped, nearest to the ice cream tree. Planted the seed and it doesnít look like it the other coco cream sprouts off the tree. I am hoping that this is a cross between the two, and I guess Iíll know someday 🤞

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1st year attempt at annona breeding.
« on: November 16, 2019, 08:38:01 AM »
Basically just posting pics for any advice and to reference:

Here is a reticulata x sugar apple from seeds a friend gave me, next to a reticulata seedling.

Here is a seedling sugar apple off my Na Dai tree.

Here is a seedling hybrid off my Na Dai tree I crossed with reticulata pollen or Lisa atemoya pollen. I had labeled the different flowers based on which pollen was used BUT some very windy days blew the colored coded markers off the tree 🤷‍♂️ I am leaning toward it being SA x Reticulata though. One thing I did notice when planting the seeds were that they were longer and thin like reticulata seeds (whether that holds true is my guess).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Macadamia nut, cultivar?
« on: November 09, 2019, 11:02:09 AM »

Hey Forum,

Bought the above macadamia nut from Excalibur as ďBeaumontĒ which was what I was looking for. Finally got some new growth on the tree and according to Wikipedia ďBeaumontĒ is supposedly reddish new growth. Can anyone confirm if I have a mislabeled tree?

Hey Forum,

Came across two videos

1) looks like discussing seedless avocado, can anyone that speaks Spanish provide a summary of this? Is it an explanation on how produce a seedless variety?

2) this video is on inducing blooming by girdling branches, I find this really interesting but am confused about about how the fertilization ie nitrogen, potassium, and boron plays into the discussion because of a possible miscommunication with the subtitle translation? Can you girdle anytime of the year to induce blooming?

Thanks for any help with these.
