Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Do ants damage white sapote blossoms?
« on: October 13, 2023, 10:01:59 PM »
I had the same issue this year with ants, noticed them running up and down the tree and getting the sap off the flowers. I think they do damage to the stigma of the flower as my fruitlets were turning brown and dropping

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Peches/nectarines in pots?
« on: February 27, 2023, 04:02:46 PM »
I've tried with semi dwarf varieties in 25G wood containers, they produce great for a year or two then start declining unless I put them in the ground. I suspect combination of getting rootbound and high soil temperatures. But I have one of those super dwarf ones in a container it is is still growing great with no issues, so I think it is important to start with a dwarf/superdwarf type if you want to keep it potted up for more than a couple years

Anyone have any of these sunquat seeds or small plants?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bees in greenhouse? What have u tried?
« on: February 02, 2023, 10:15:06 AM »
You can buy those little all in one bumblebee boxes which contain a queen, workers and food. They are sold for pollinating commercial greenhouses. In Canada you can get Naturpol branded ones through Koppert. I have wanted to get one just to see how they are like but they have like 100 bees so that might bee too many for a small greenhouse. Bumblebees are what pollinate passion flowers, the other bees are usually not big enough to pollinate them.

Exactly my problem too with my Ruby Supreme, mealie bug magnet, and almost impossible to get rid of all of them because the leaves are ribbed and they hide underneath :( Now I just hard prune all the branches off before going into the greenhouse. My mango tree normally is pest free but in the winter in the greenhouse they also get mealies.

Brian, I love my cattley guava. Nice looking plant, No pests at all and fruit continuously. I have a ruby supreme and it is a magnet for scale, whiteflies and mealy almost ready to get rid of it.

Your plants look healthy for sure, but kind of on the small size to hold lots of fruit. If its a small plant, it needs to divert a lot of energy to make good quality fruit. Mine is about 5' tall and about 3-4 years old. It started growing a lot faster/healthier after I put it in a rootmaker type pot and leaving it out in the winter. They are pretty durable, I've also tried having it wet and dry and no big deal also root prune no issues either.

I'm not an expert on Feijoa but I have one in a pot and my Feijoa only seemed to flower/fruit well after I left it in sub zero weather for a while. I leave it outside most of the winter and only bring it into the garage when it is going to be colder than -8C. They need some chill hours, I suspect your 7-10C is just low enough for that. How big are your plants? If you are growing your Feijoa in the greenhouse, I suspect it isn't getting as much sun as it should and could be wasting its energy. Personally, I have found that some plants (like pomegranate, feijoa, annona) it is better to let them go dormant than waste their energy with spindly winter growth.

I am Southern Ontario, Canada. I have 2 lean two structures I built against the house that function as greenhouses in winter, and during the nice months more like a four season patio as I swap the polycarbonate windows with mesh inserts.

All my plants have to be in pots because of the winters here.

I have fruited various citrus, mango, guava, Babados/Jamaican cherry, pitangutuba, jaboticaba, starfruit, sapodilla, papaya and more.

Please message me I would like a roll.

Thanks!

I have about 11 packs of tape left if anyone is interested

One of my potted tropicals is a Glenn Mango in a 25G pot. It has been bearing fruit for a few years. It has been about 7' tall for the past few years so I think that's the max with pruning.

I ordered a couple years ago and I got my order via courier.

I see that they post in the for sale forum sometimes. Maybe message them through here?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: red jabo first flowering
« on: August 25, 2022, 09:06:45 PM »
For me, I would say 50% turned to fruit. A cluster of flowers at a single point usually two would hold

Thanks!    Do you have an idea of roughly what portion of flowers are likely to become fruit?

Nice job! Mine is similar sized as yours and has put out a couple dozen fruit so far and is still flowering, I'm thinking yours will do the same too.

Still have buddy tape available if anyone is interested

I use citrus type fertilizer. I found that when they are young they don't hold much fruit but once they get bigger almost all the fruit will set so you probably just need more time. I have a yellow and a red and the red one is like 20 times bigger than the yellow and they are just over a year old. Lots of fruit setting now, probably a couple hundred.

Thanks to all for the input, will wait for the fruit to ripen to confirm.

Thanks for the props W., yes I was surprised that the first flush of flowers has set fruit, and seems like another flush is happening now!

Congratulations are in order for you successfully fruiting a jaboticaba farther north than anyone has (probably) ever done before. At least, I have never heard of any other Canadian growers fruiting a jaboticaba before. It is rare enough for someone to do so in a greenhouse or other protected space in the temperate areas of the US.

I have had some success in rooting the little suckers that popup around the base of the plant. Root them like any cutting, but takes longer.

I have a Jaboticaba (Up here in Canada!) that is starting to flower/fruit this year. I am unsure of the species and was wondering if there is a way to tell what kind it is? I'm guessing it would be easier when the fruit change color to narrow down things but wondering if there is any other way? I had bought it seed grow, not grafted, I would estimate total age is about 6 years old?

Thanks

Ya I agree, it looks like something ate it while it was small, fruit healed itself, couldn't grow new skin so left with a growing hole with scar tissue. My stone fruit all look like that when that happens down to the cracked appearance in those photos.
