I asked an Aussie on another garden blog about these and it seems that the female plants will bear fruit without a male, but the fruit is smaller and the seeds are sterile. but since it can be propagated by cuttings that is not important to me. I found female plants so as long as I can get fruit that is all I care about.

my mother used to keep the fruit in the basement, it keeps away bugs and rodents

I finally found a nursery in CA that has these and they told me the same thing as this forum, that you do not necessarily need male and females, the owner of the nursery (digging dog nursery) said that they clone from a singular bush and it flowers and fruits, so much for information from the internet.

I would be happy to pay for any seeds if you have any.

I sent a information request on wanderlust but I was under the impression that you needed both a male and female plant. Digging dog nursery has female plants but when I asked verified that you needed a male plant for berries

I apologize if this is a stupid question but I am trying to get tasmanian pepperberry seeds and I have never had such a difficult time. My question is, I can get the "spice" which is dried fruit with seed in it but what are my chances that this was dried at a low enough temperature that the "seeds" would be viable? Does anyone have any experience growing this, do the seeds need to be "fresh"? I have a post in the buy/trade section but was wondering if just buying the whole spice would work (it does with some kitchen spices like coriander and fennel). thanks

does anyone know where I can get some seeds? I have only found one nursery that sells the plant in the US and I know you need male and female plants and would like to try to grow my own.

my greenhouse is smaller but I keep high humidity, I spray monthly with Hydrogen peroxide to keep mold from forming, keep a small fan running and have "drip" towels around the floor that I wash and replace on the day I spray.

Here's a few for the fruit hall of shame

1) Noni (smells like an outhouse)
2) Quince (tastes like soft wood)
3) Kiwano / African Horned melon (why are these even sold?)
4) Pond Apple (Annona glabra) Racoons love them

Also in this group, are those Mangos grown in places like Peru and Mexico that are picked a month before they
are mature, then refrigerated, hot dipped according to USDA requirements and sold here in Florida and elsewhere

I disagree, while Quince isn't very good for fresh eating I have a pineapple quince that I make quince paste from and it is delicious.
in the US for 50cts to $1. The vast majority of these are HORRIBLE

Noni, i think it's more of a medicinal. Don't see anybody claiming it's a pleasure fruit.  :o
Membrillo, a canned paste made from quince is extremely popular in S. America. Guess it's not one of those out of hand fruits.
Kiwano, makes nice salad dressing if you mash them a bit. Can become invasive here, and nasty thorny groundcover.
Pond apple, was used as rootstock here for other annonas, but most nurseries have abandoned that.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bubble wrap for greenhouse insolation

my greenhouse is small so I thought bubblewrap would be a good option but it was difficult to keep in place on the outside and when I put it on the inside the humidity made it difficult to adhere. I broke down and bought an inexpensive water resistant electric heater.

when I was doing my undergrad research I was using cat's claw (unicaria tomentosa) as an alternative medication to model for a rheumatoid arthritis treatment. It is an extreme immune booster but does not affect TNF pathways, using PCR we discovered that it decreased HIV cell receptor sites by over 800% and increased the WBC counts when injected in mice that had been given H1N1 virus. It does have some side effects, it will decrease estrogen in women and will also decrease blood pressure as well as cause some gastrointestinal issues ( lasts about a week). It is used as a cure all in central america, one of my biology professors was from guatemala and swears that it worked as a treatment for her mother's breast cancer (decreased estrogen will block some cancers in women) that is why I used it in my research.

Bareroot is probably your problem, pawpaws are incredibly finicky about their taproot, I have only been able to get two non-grafted ones to take.

are they close to any kind of runoff? I lost a tree (not a pawpaw) that I had planted too close to our asphalt driveway. disease would be the only other think I can think of but I don't have nearly the problems with my pawpaws like any of my other trees. You might check just below the mulch line to see if there is any discoloration or insect damage.

if it is an established tree and is getting enough water it might be that it is in too sunny of a spot. Pawpaws are an understory trees and can be finicky, I killed about a half dozen because I tried to plant some that I dug up in the woods. they have a long taproot and if disturbed will not always tolerate being moved. Two of the four I have were grown from seedling the other two are grafted.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / panache tiger fig
« on: August 17, 2021, 05:45:47 AM »
I just received a very small (approx 4 inches tall) panache tiger fig. since it is so late in the season when temperatures start to drop can I just bring it in as a houseplant and then put it in a colder area (unheated basement or shed) in say february to get it's 100 chill hours?
