Looking for a Guava 'Barbie pink' plant.
« on: January 21, 2017, 01:29:06 PM »
I have called some of the bigger nurseries but no one seems to have it.

Anyone know where I can buy one?

A Natural Farm had them at one time.  Maybe ECHO Nursery too.

Thanks, PM239. I have not called ECHO yet. I will check with them.

Rob - I was hoping people here who already have the plant might be able to share where they bought it.

Some people who sell may not visit or post in this forum so I would post in buy/sell too.

Fruitscapes is in Bokeelia on Pine Island, not that far from ECHO.  I would check with both.

Thanks, to all of you for your suggestions. Fruitscapes has them for sale.

Brev Grower - Any particular reason you don't like the Barbie Pink Guava?

PM239 - How old is your plant? Is it a seed grown, cutting grown or grafted plant?

I got my Barbie at exotica and a very similar but larger called Hong Kong pink  from Roge Meyer. they were both  heavy bearers after two years but the taste was inconsistent somewhat sweet mushy and bland at times......strong fragrance, smell better than they taste. I'm down to two hybrids Jalisco rojo and Dolores. I'm going to try  Sancti Spiritus and Aishwaira I'm hoping they do well here

Sancti Spiritus

Here are a few photos to illustrate the Barbie Pink Guava.
The ripe fruit has the smooth texture of a Bartlet Pear... with the taste of a mild Strawberry.
Very juicy too.

Barbie is mediocre fruit chooped it down along with Hong Kong pink for that reason but are great processing guavas.

There you see both on the left in the middle hybrid dessert guava Jalisco Rojo
Barbie and HkP were used for guava shells and marmalade because of their sizes

I agree that Barbie Pink is only so-so in the flavor department.
Very mild - but big!
Seems to bloom often too.

What is the best tasting Guava... in your opinion?

I think they have loads of flavor. they are just not very sweet. They are awsome for jams and jelly. I made two guava cobblers  last week using only two fruit. Lots of flesh in the shell.

As far as one of the best i've ever had for eating out of hand was the variegated honey moon. Really good and sweet. But lots of seed.

It's consistently bland you'll find a few good ones here and there but overall strictly a processing guavas. If you want a dessert guava I have Jalisco rojo and Dolores. Both of these are early guavas so I am experimenting with Sancti Spiritus and Aishwaira hybrids from Cuba & India

Hey Jackson, I don't like the flavor of the Barbie Pink guava. As stated, it is blaaaaand and has only mild sweetness. Lots of seeds(like small pebbles) on top of that and it's a no - brainer. It's going when I get something else I want to plant. On the positive side - makes a good jam, grows and produces like crazy, and also seems to be a haven for lady bugs(and other bugs which the ladybird eats).
At least in my area 9b.
