Guabiju pruning
« on: August 06, 2021, 05:27:59 PM »
A friend gave me a nice guabiju to plant out and I’m currently deciding on a location. A search told me it gets big but elsewhere I read it can be used as a hedge. Is it similar to jaboticaba in that it can be kept very small?

Thank you

I have a bush/ shrub/small tree about 12 ft tall I keep around that size by drop crotch pruning! It took over 15 years to get that tall where I'm at on Central Coast of California-- two to three miles from beach. Easy to keep any size you want.

How much fruits do you get off that one in a good harvest? What time of year are they ripe?

Jonah, the biggest crop comes in fall but had small crop in Spring this year too! I eat them mostly out of hand so hard to tell about but I think maybe overall in fall about a quart of fruit. they are mostly small in size about 1/2"and this is tree from Ben Poirier, have another seedling from Oscar, that has bigger leaves but has not fruited yet! I think being shaded by big macadamia in front of guabiju is effecting fruiting or else that's all it has to offer.

Hey Scott, how’d you describe the flavor? Thanks
Nate
