Fruit out of my orchard kept disappearing overnight. I finally got tired of it and dug a Tiger Pit Trap.
15 feet deep with vertical sides. Covered with bamboo and leaves. Caught my first fruit thief last night.
He's lucky I decided against punji stakes... so he's just trapped... not injured.
I live in a college town with a lot of college students and sure enough this is one of the local frat boys.
So what should I do with him?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing "Lolita" Suriname Cherry?
« on: February 18, 2021, 12:28:28 PM »
Anyone growing "Lolita" Suriname Cherry?
I have a seedling which is about 4 years old... Black fruit.... 10 gallon container...5 ft tall and budding up nicely right now on my front porch.
I've noticed it has relatively compact growth habit with darker green leaves than my other Surinames.
I wondered if other growers of this variety noticed these characteristics.
Here's some photos from this fall:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold Hardiness of Cherry of the Rio Grande?
« on: January 23, 2021, 01:22:29 PM »
Winter dilemma... I have limited space in my greenhouses... and as usual... I have accumulated more plants than I can fit inside... so I've had to cull some of my plants... including Cherry of the Rio Grandes... several year old plants mostly in 5 gallon containers or larger. Surprisingly they have endured a dozen nights with below freezing temps... with several in the low 20s... and with no damage. I had written them off initially... but now I have a suspicion they will be sticking around for another season.
I am in West central Alabama - Zone 7a-8b... in the middle of town.

Just curious about other people's experience with winter hardiness of COTRGs.
Thanks for your thought.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Most Successful Fruiting This Year?
« on: December 21, 2020, 12:41:39 PM »
What were your most successful fruit generating plants this year?
What surpassed your expectations?

For me:
Thai Dwarf Mulberries - Huge quantities - relentless production
Passiflora edulis - Red Rover - Really delicious- nice edible crunchy seeds too
Eugenia Calycina - "Nelita" - large and plentiful -  and "Garnet" - Large and tasty
Cedar Bay Cherries- Very prolific
Pitangatubas - Sour and plentiful
Owari Satsumas - Large, sweet and abundant - flourished in my front yard without protection
Japanese Persimmons - Sweet, plentiful and long lasting on the trees
Na Dai Sugar Apple - Loaded and tasty
Key Limes - Fruit to spare
Finger Limes - Pumping them out

Here's a few photos of a Zill seedling selection I'm calling "Gazillion".
It fruited some this summer... but now it appears to be exploding with blooms
I've moved it into my Citrus Dome for the winter:
