Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pearl vs Crystal Guava
« on: May 29, 2022, 01:45:01 AM »
Do you guys get a lot of fruits from your crystal trees?
My aunt's Crystal has been very productive. Sometimes too many fruits. The fruits are smaller in size. She doesn't like too thin. Despite the smaller size, it is still very good.

I'll have an Emperor airlayer ready in the next 2 to 3 months.  If you still want one by then.

Hi Diana, my Mauritius is 13 years old. First 3 to 4 years was a really painfully slow growing. After that, it just took off. During the active growing growing season, I would feed it fish and kelp emulsion once a week. Mulching really helps too. When it got to fruiting age, I use a zero nitrogen fertilizer from EB stone 0 10 10 to just focus on fruiting. If you want the tree to bloom, you will want to stop feeding and watering late fall into winter. Gotta let it suffer and stress out for it to fruit.  When the tree starts to wake up, then start giving some bloom booster. Very important to only give low to zero nitrogen fertilizer. Since your tree is still young, feed it, try to get as much growth out of it during active seasons.

Here in San Gabriel, Mauritius does pretty well for me. It started to produce regularly around year 7. It will bear heavy one year and light on the next. It's been pretty consistent. This year has very little blooms cause I over fertilized trying to push my grafts.  Overall,  I'm very happy with this tree.

These were off season Chuleon fruits harvested this year around April. Has very thick flesh. The fruit quality is as good as Sakip. Tree currently has blooms now for regular season fruits.

Here's how it looks like wrapped

Should get a really strong  airlayer.

Instead of doing a regular airlayer on my longan tree,  I decided to graft a seedling rootstock to the branch so it can have a taproot.

Update on my root graft. It's been almost a month. I removed  the soil to check the seedling roots. So far I see some white bumps on the roots which means the graft is healing. Now I'm going  to remove a ring of bark on the branch and wrap them all together.

How does Sakip taste? Sweeter and juicier than Kohala?
[/quote]

Sakip is super sweet. The flesh has a crunchy crisps to it and juicy at the same time with a very strong aroma. Grows extremely well like the Kohala. But, Taste way way better. I have a small air layer ready for sale if your interested, send me a PM.

I got 2 from lance- very slow growers
The Red Longan that you got, are they air layered or grafted from mature tree? Are they all seedlings?

Palingkecil, where do they have red longan for sale? Does the seller have  any information weather it's a seedling, air layered or grafted? If you want a variety that do extremely well and taste superior, I highly recommend Sakip. After tasting this one, you won't love your Kohala as much anymore.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee grafted onto Longan?

Hi Steve, are you sure bagging the scion is a good idea? Itís already wrapped in buddytape, good enough, no? Wouldnít it be too hot for the new growth? My lychees here in SoCal can take 90 degrees now problem. They can handle the heat even better than my longans.

I cleft grafted 2 Sweetheart scions onto Emperor on 3/26. It's grafted on the new harden younger shoots. Both scions are pushing out very nicely.

Your tree looks fine from here. If your tree is small, I would trim off the flowers and let it branch out. A light dose of fish emulsion might encourage some new growth.

Here's a video to show the end results of what im trying to achieve.  My only difference in technique is I haven't remove the ring of bark yet. I will do that later when my graft heals. The ring of bark will be made at the same level where the seedling rootstock starts to grow roots. So both root systems will be at the same level.  In the video, his root graft fails and the airlayer takes. The goal is to have lateral roots from the airlayer and tap roots from the seedling.

I don't understand this logic. If the brand is grafted on the rootstock and all good, then why the need to have a bunch of hairs (you called roots) in mid air?
It's basically approach grafting  with  a seedling.  When the union heals, will cut off the branch and use the seedling as the rootstock to support the branch.
I was planning to remove a ring of bark on the branch to induce roots after the graft takes. So it can have two different root systems.

Just discovered a seedling loquat tree growing in LA with high percentage of single seed fruits. Extra large fruits do get up to four seeds though. Fruits are just starting to sweeten up. Very juicy and meaty .

Here's a pic of an average size fruit  with single seed

Gosh darn it! I was really hoping it would be Floridaís Hakip. Iíve tasted the fruit before from a tree I use to have. Itís definitely different from the Sweetheart that I have growing now. I prefer the flavor of Floridaís Hakip over Sweetheart.

Just received the nematode control. Not sure how much to use for each gallon of water. How much do you guys use on your yangmei trees? Label says 8oz in 6gallon of water for mostly everything.  Think thats safe for the new bare rooted trees? Thanks

I just divided 8 by 6 and used 1.33 oz per gallon. I did it as a bare root dip and then used a fresh batch for initial watering. My trees survived fine.

Simon
Thanks for leading the way Simon

Did you remove a ring of bark below the grafted branch? I'm curious if it the graft will heal faster that way, plus for it to callous to form roots later when branch is removed.

Hello everyone. For those of you growing this variety, can you please post some close up pictures of the leaf growth in different stages? Thank you. I want to compare to the one I'm growing.
