Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is the best tasting avocado variety?

Looks like this Pollock is very happy
Beautiful tree.  Congrats.  Last year we planted Pollock also at relative's home in Port St. Lucie.  The buds are swelling on my six-ft. young Simmonds tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are black and white sapote worth it
« on: February 21, 2024, 09:22:04 PM »
I find them to be both mid-tier fruits, and wouldn't grow them unless I was in a tropical climate and had space.
Black sapote is underwhelming and so is white sapote too.
Now, there are many people who grow white sapote here, so it would be easy to connect with scions etc.
Just the fruit didn't do it for me, when I can grow mangos and lychees easily.
But pluses of black sapote is that it is a winter crop in FL, so it helps balance things out, and white sapote is sweet w a caramel taste. But not good enough for me.
Just how much white sapote have you actually eaten?  Are you really qualified to comment on this fruit?
John,
I've had it several different times and tried several different varieties.
while good, it doesn't compare to the FL mangos.
I don't know if you've eaten it tree-ripened in California, but if you haven't, I would say you don't know this fruit.  IMHO.  But you're right that mangos are better.

I'm finding that my Monroe and Simmonds trees have leaves that are particularly striking.

It would be hugely helpful to the forum if your topic titles could be more specific.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Erinose Mite Damage on Lychee?
« on: January 28, 2024, 02:05:57 PM »
You see, it's not really my tree.  It belongs to the community, plus it's a very tall, very mature tree.  I wouldn't mind seeing a white sapote or mamey sapote tree as a replacement, but the current HOA board of directors hates fruit trees with a passion.  (Some people are idiots!)

Poor lychee tree!  Do they ever recover on their own?  I won't be spraying anything on it.

Thanks Jonah. But my soil is unfriendly to avocados. In five years, my trees have barely grown or died. When wet, it's straight up goopy. Does it make sense to mound up using this soil?
I'd say no.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: figs!!!! an underated fruit
« on: January 11, 2024, 04:22:16 PM »
Like I said, most people in America think of apples, oranges, and bananas when they think of fruit.  Americans don't know "good food" since supermarket shopping became the norm after WW2.  This is changing over time.  Yeah, so eat more figs, and grow more figs, Americans!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Bloom in South Florida
« on: January 11, 2024, 04:11:31 PM »
The consistently cool weather we've been getting this month seems to have created a pause in mango bloom.  I guess it will resume when the weather warms up.  How will this affect the crop this year?  Any guesses?

Also crazy heavy feeder so compost old fruit veg scraps so you don’t spend 50$ on fertilizer for 5$ of bananas.
I second that.  As a matter of fact, you can simply mulch heavily around your plant (4 to 6 inches) and then pull back the mulch, add the garbage, and replace the mulch. Each day go to a new spot.  If you have a few plants, and maybe some papaya plants as well, you can use your garbage (green manure) very effectively in this way.  You'll have very healthy plants and very good fruit.

Not underrated at all.   Maybe in America by people who only eat apples, oranges, and bananas.  People have been eating figs for thousands of years!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Peru in December.

I know this is an old thread but would like to buy Caigua seeds. Not Pedata / Lady Slippers. There is another variety that is as big as your outstretched hand. My wife is Peruvian and we grow Huacatay, Aji Amarillo and Pedata very successfully. Always happy to swap seeds with anyone. Will pay for the giant Caigua.
Thanks!
We have a section of the Forum for that.

A lovely 53 when I took the dog out this morning for his walk.  I was reading that the polar vortex could dip down to our latitude this winter, as it did in 2021.  That would be great for Florida if it hit the East Coast to get the iguana population in check.  I'm waiting with my machete!

My Goldfinger is starting to grow now.  I'm excited.  I hope it's at least as good as Raja Puri.

Decent multi-day cold front on the way.  I wish we would see 40's at night, instead of 50's.  Hopefully sometime in January.  I just want the lychee tree to bloom!

Out of those three I guess I'd go with Oro Negro.  I've tasted really good ON, but also bland ON.  (I hate Day.)  We planted a 3-gal. Carmen (Hass) at a property in Port St. Lucie earlier this year.  Keeping our fingers crossed that it will bear well.  :)

The wind is brutal and is beating everything up, and it should get continue through the weekend.  I hope the papaya leaves don't get shredded.  The big banana plant will suffer, for sure.  I haven't been to the beach lately, but I'd have to imagine that all the sand they spent millions to put back on the beach (Boca/Deerfield/Hillsboro) is at least 75% washed away by now.
