Looks pretty tasty. How did you like the taste compare to a regular sugar apple? Is there a big difference in quality of taste?

Im interested in adding this variety to my collection. Where did you buy your tree from?

Here's my grafted Tai wu yuen longan

Up close shot

I only tried one piece so far. It was not as sweet as my other longans. The skin seems thicker and has larger seed, but it still has decent seed to flesh ratio. Im leaving it on longer to see if it can get bigger. Flesh was pretty crunchy with some mild sweet juice.

Unfortunately, my fuk yan didn't make it to maturity. My mom cut it off too soon. It was big and brown just like the tai wu yuen longans. I noticed with these  two varieties, they turn brown at a very early stage. So gotta be careful when to pick. Notice in the first picture, the longans in the background is green and smaller.

Yeah, I tend to over do it with the tree seal, my main concern was rain and water.
here is a link with more info about this variety.http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=196.0

The scions were orderd from USDA,ARS of Hawaii. I originally ordered 3 longan varieties based on the rankings on their website. Sadly, Sak ip didn't make it.

My mauritius lychee is not tall enough to be affected by the wind. That's why it looks so good. I don't do any water treatment. I believe that the 4 inch layer of bark wood mulch takes care of the water problem. As for grafting longans, I have the highest success rate in the summer time. A stab side veneer,(i like to call it) is my preferred method. I choose a scion that is greenish to hard wood with mature buds. When making the cut on the rootsock, I leave the small flap to hold the scion into place. For the scion, I don't cut straight down on the scion to expose the cambium, it's more of a slanted cut and on the opposite side of the scion I make a small ramp cut. That's where the flap on the rootstock will make contact with. Then I tie it real tight with nursery tie tape(the stretchy kind) and parafilm over.  Also, the scion doesn't have to be too long. A couple of buds is enough. I hope this helps.

Heres what it looks like wrapped up

I'll take pictures of the graft union and post later.

Thanks Nch! Yeah, I do find longans harder to graft. Anonas were nothing compare to longan. My attempt was about 15 and I only got four takes. I consider all those luck. Lychees was even harder. I got 1out of 20.

Lychees and longans do look a lot alike when it's still babies.

Very nice work Simon!! I thought I was going to have my first bumper crop of lychees this year. Happy too soon. Initially, the whole tree was loaded with fruits, got to be about nickel size and then I see new flashes coming out and thats when the fruits started droping. Its possible that the heat wave had something to do with the fruit drop. Could be a conisident, the first heat wave I lost almost half of the fruits and just yesterday after the blast of hot dry air, im down to just a couple.

As for my longans, they seem to produce every year, so im not too worry. They not as sensitive as lychees. My newly grafted longans are setting fruits also. I grafted in July of last year. 2 panicals Fuk yan and one Tai wu yuen are setting fruits. Can't wait to taste these varieties.

Initial lychee fruit set

Having problems uploading pics all of a sudden. Will post more pics later.

Hello everyone, here are updates on Cangrejo sugar apple grafts done on 1/18/14. Very good results.

Got 5 out of 7 in this pot, grafted on, cherimoya rootstocks. Scions were toothpicks

This here is Multi cherimoya rootstocks, African Pride as interstock, then Cangrejo Sugar Apple on top.

Mr. Minh on the left and two more Cangrejo SA

A couple more Cangrejo sugar apples in pots

Here are more Cangrejo sugar apples grafted on my grandma's tree

While i'm at it, here is a pot of 3 Big Red Sugar Apples grafted around the same time.

Giant Mexican Sugar Apple is barely waking up. Felt forever. Almost gave up.

That's it for now.
