I will say that starting with grafted trees is much easier and faster in terms of growth for me.
Seedlings can be hard to get to grow when starting in sub optimal conditions like inside or a grow tent for some reason.
Now of course, it costs more money to get one, but that's what I've experienced.
Or if you are growing out seeds to use as rootstock to graft, I would just use the supermarket tommy ones as they are very vigorous.

Some people have been importing some of the top tier ones from China.
Now, with all that's going on with lychee here, I would be very hesitant to do that.

Good to see...
I recently became aware of how good tasting and cool these fruits are.
In fact, I'm eating some tonight.
Have some seeds hopefully sprouting so I should be able to report back next spring.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee flowers fail or win? Help pls
« on: March 27, 2024, 08:54:14 AM »
Relax, it looks like a normal bloom to me. And yes, males are first to open shortly followed by females and then a few hermaphrodite flowers (hermaphrodite bloom does not tend to make high quality fruit from what I have observed). It is very rare to see completely all male bloom on a tree. The only time I have ever seen that is as the result of a freeze about the time the flowers were going to open. Some varieties have a lot more female blooms (like Mauritius). Sweet Heart has way fewer. Remember, out of that whole panicle with hundreds of blooms only around a dozen will end up as fruit. So, there don't have to be many female flowers...
Thanks!
I'll keep you updated on how it does.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee flowers fail or win? Help pls
« on: March 26, 2024, 06:10:25 PM »

So a while back I wondered what to do with lychee I didn’t know if new growth was flush or flower so I pinched back a lot of the tips. And those tips grew to flowers even though without pinching them they were flowers…so basically the whole tree is flowering with the small I pinched portion going first…and all I see are male flowers😭🤧😣
So I read up and it says that males come first then females, but I. Don’t know when that switch happens.

Pictured is the unpinched flush, so it’s the first to flower, while 75% of the tree hasn’t opened yet.

So what is the consensus
And also if everything is male, it’s gonna be tough to fruit this😣 I don’t know what the plan is long term if it can’t do it right.

I know male flowers happen when it’s too warm, but is there other factors like nutrition?
I need some advice….thanks!

Sorry my syntax sucks rn.

Hi guys,
just finished my newest video where I got to visit Xain at Xain's World Nursery in West Palm Beach.
Check it out!
https://youtu.be/CCU6LaNDE0M?si=3Xc2ZSS1mLOxq-IG

His greenhouse is amazing with many rare variegated plants...won't spoil it now...go check it out!

I've gotten many cool plants from Xain like g. aristata, lemon bay rum, mamee apple, etc. He's a great source for trees! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Don't forget to like and subscribe!

Totally respect the grind.
I used to be in that position as a young kid in highschool...
I now sell plants and other stuff so it kinda pays back.
I just ordered some white sapote fruits from a good friend.
If you can't find any, I can send you a couple granted they are firm enough to ship.

People need to try durian multiple times to like it...for most people it's the onion smell...associate onions not with savory, but sweet too.
Monthong is not that good from store.

This a new species resembling pouteria glomerata/hypoglauca (cinnamon apple)
The main propagation way is from seeds.
They take a while to germinate unless you crack the seed shell.
For glomerata the propagation method?! Is also by seeds?!

Yes.
No one has really done much selection with them although there is some potential.
For now, it's mostly seeds.
I'm going to try some grafts soon though.
