Thanks for the link. I would agree with Mr. Gary Zill about adding a lot of Calcium via gypsum but be very careful with the Boron/Borax. It’s very easy to over fertilize with Boron and I nearly killed one of my trees using Borax at too high a concentration.

Boron toxicity looks like really bad Iron and Magnesium deficiency with stunted growth and dying outside edges of the leaves.

It may be best to find a low or no Nitrogen fertilizer with Boron already in it.

The Zill family is my national hero family. I look up to them so much because of what they’ve done for the world in terms of Mangos. I can’t imagine if the Zill family didn’t plant out and select all these wonderful new varieties that many of us have in our garden now. My hat goes off to the Zills. Keep up the excellent work!

He says, "There are a lot of really good mangos out there."  He could have said, "And most of them have come from me and my family."!!!  ;D

That uneven ripening in that video I learned about this season on many of my own fruit. I loved what he said about picking them green because this year so many varieties that stayed on the trees an extra 3-6 weeks tasted like crap. At first I thought how great it was but then was very disappointed at what was inside most of them that stayed on so long. After internalizing this from this video now I’m not going to top my 5 Orange Essence trees. I just left the fruit on too long. What a shmuck!!

Do you think Sugarloaf is that much harder to grow than other varieties?  Or just harder to know when to pick it since it stays green?

John B.

In 3 years, My sugarloaf grows lengthy, almost as lengthy as a Keitt but a tad more dense. It has very little issues with disease. Responds well to pruning. This past season, As Alex Salazar explained upon reviewing pictures of my tree in bloom: he told me sugarloaf tends to have a Majority of male flowers. For me this meant I only had three fruits on my small tree, sadly  they were all knocked off in a wind storm when they were chicken-egg sized. He also explained although they sometimes have fewer female flowers, the few female flowers usually have high probability of becoming fruit. I’m willing to allocate space for my tree, as long as it takes. I may even top work another one of my trees over to E4, it is my favorite of the 80 or so varieties I’ve tasted.

Thanks, Abe.  So if you could only plant 4 mango trees in a small yard, maybe Sugarloaf shouldn't be one of them, in spite of how great it tastes.

Seanny, it could be our climate. I wonder if temperatures affect the ratio of male and female flowers?

It could also be that we have more chill hours so more flowers.

Temperature is said to determine sex ratios on mangos, such as on Carrie flowers this Spring--- almost zero fruit sets on the first flowering, decent crop on second flowering.

So if Sugarloaf has many consecutive nights below 60° will it have more or  less male flowers?
If you read this forum much. Several years ago there was a big brouhaha on the definition  of chill hours :)

Simon any brand recommendations that has this?

If you definitely have a Boron deficiency, you may want to look into Solubor and if you have high pH soils, it’s best to apply Boron as a foliar spray using a Fogger for efficiency and better coverage. You will also want to use a good spreader/sticker.

If you have no indications of Boron deficiency and you just want to give it a fertilizer with some Boron in it already, Dyna Gro foliage Pro has 0.01% Boron which is sufficient or if your plants are ready for fruiting, their Bloom has 0.02% Boron. A little goes a long way with Boron.

I’ve overdone it with Borax and it was really bad and I almost killed my trees.

If you do have a Boron deficiency, also look into Zinc deficiencies.

Simon, I’ve also had Alex Salazar tell me that many new varieties such a Sugarloaf would probably do much better in climates like yours as opposed to our very humid hot ones down here in south Florida. I suspect he was referring to better blooms. Can’t wait to see how your trees so over the next few years/ please update us.

Sure thing Honest Abe. I’m very excited about the E4 seedlings wether they’re clones or zygotic.
