Top 5 jaboticaba to grow in limestone soils
« on: January 04, 2022, 07:41:20 PM »
I've seen a million threads like this but with mangos.
I'm sort of surprised there hasn't been much talk with all the hype the last few years.
I'm no expert on plinias or myrciarias but I'm familiar with some of the older ones.

So the question is if you had room to plant five in the ground without a frost concern what would you pick?

I'd go with 5 of every plinia/myrciaria!

But to answer your actual question:

I'd go variegated where possible:
Cambuca
Polpa Roxa/Polpa de Rosa
Olho de Boi
Giant Mulchi
Sabara rootstock with Grimal, Spiritosentensis and as many other plinia species as I could fit...

Sabara is the most suited to limestone as it can handle higher ph. So anything grafted on to sabara rootstock is the best. To help combat high ph, people in south FL can add sulfur to help lower the ph. I'm sure more experienced people who actually live there can offer you more valuable advice.
Edit:
The 5 I would plant grafted onto sabara would be
grimal - taste like muscadine
sabara - classic good taste
cambuca  - might do better on its own roots don't know anyone who has a large tree on sabara roots. good taste like a peachy mango. Comparable tastewise to cabelluda (yellow jabo)
red - hints of berry
and branca vinho phitrantha from Otto Anderson collection - haven't tasted this one, but many jabo experts think this one is one of the best tasting jabos.

Can vouch for Sabara doing fine growing in thin soil on top of solid limestone. M. Vexator is doing well in ground also. Red hybrid, not as well, but alive and fruits off and on most of the year. Just planted a Grimal seedling, will see how it goes.

O cool. Looks like my sabara is starting to fruit so I'll have some rootstock soon.
There has been so many coming out recently, can't keep up.

Got cambuca but all these hybrids are confusing lol.
