Citrus General Discussion / Re: Cocktail Pummelo tree (Mandalo)
« on: January 17, 2024, 09:10:25 PM »
I don’t have one, but after eating a fruit from my friends tree, I want one.   Very wet and sweet.  Smooth, thin skin.  She has some air layers.  I will be getting one.

Now I'm a 10b.  I will grow as a 10a zone, knowing that there are extremes every 20 years or so that can bring me down to a 9b.

I've personally have seen someone's Yangmei collection.  No, they are not on the forum.  All of his trees have fruit.  I was looking for a "male" tree, but he confirmed that all of his trees have fruit.   Here is what I found online about the differences in the inflorescence:

I will look for the inflos to confirm that they are both on the same plant.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cycad appreciation

I was into palms and cycads before getting into tropical fruits.  It's another rabbit hole you can go very deep in.   ;D

Where can I find 'Pierce' Cherimoya in Orange County, CA?

Bill - Joe here from HB.  I got a grafted lychee from you.

Do you have anymore Paggi's (variegated dwarf namwah)?

Did it fruit?  How was the taste compared to Strawberry Guava?

I have a 15 gal 'Florida Sweet' Barbados Cherry for sale.  I have limited space and have decided to plant a different fruit tree.  Pick up in Huntington Beach, CA.

Johnny - I've had AE AE.  With our climate, it is very difficult to keeps the leaves happy.  Hopefully, there are better cultivars for us.

What is different about Grumichamma “gigante”?  How much larger are the fruits?

Thanks, Kaz.

Got mine today.

If the hummingbirds just laid the eggs, it will be 3-4 weeks for the baby birds to leave the nest.  I just finished photo documenting the whole process with a nest in my yard.  Amazing how fast the babies grow.

It was a family of possums for me.  They stripped my Grimal jaboticaba of most of it's fruits.  The only reason I know they were possums was because one of my rat traps caught a baby.

It's so subjective.  But based on physical size of fruit and description, I would say it's a Big Jim or Big Jim seedling because they are more readily available.  The quality of the fruit can change from one season to the next.  Good Luck!

To me, That's an awesome looking yard! Well done Joe!

Thanks, Chris.  Lots of planting to do this Spring.

Hi Kaz,

I would like to get Vista White only.

I don’t have the heat that plumerias want.  I do have a lot of plumerias that I am taking out.  Only keeping a few of the rainbows.

I've been collecting rare tropical palm trees / tree ferns / ti's / crotons for about 15 years.  As the palm trees grew overhead, I found that I had a lot of space underneath where once was covered by palm fronds.  I was already incorporating ti's and crotons in the garden.  What could I grow that would fill the void created by the palms getting taller?  I was fortunate to go on a palm garden tour where the owner incorporated several Eugenias varieties.  I researched online and soon caught the bug for tropical fruit trees/bushes.  I am blessed to have a 1/4 acre garden in Huntington Beach.  I have planted several Eugenias and now have moved up to adding mangoes / lychee / longan / loquat / tropical guavas / jujube to the mix.  I am no where planted out, but hope to have these planted this year.

This picture is just a section of my garden where I will incorporate the fruit trees:

Kaz - Is this a good time to graft?  I thought you should not graft when trees are pushing?

I was hoping this topic would be coming up.  I really enjoy loquats and have a couple of Big Jim seedlings.  I wanted to know which varieties I should be grafting on them this year.
