I've seen some on the branches of trees, this specific one is on my ladder. Very hard to the touch, hard to scrape off, like it's glued on with Gorilla Glue, Lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pouteria spp. Which is which?

I have 2 Pouterias here.
1 is P. viridis (Green Sapote), and the other is P. campechiana (Canistel).
Can someone help identify which is which?
Plant B has leaves that are soft to the touch, almost "velvety".
Plant A is just smooth, shiny, and "harder" to the touch.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit training question.

I put a cutting of Physical Graffiti in a nursery pot a couple months ago, it now has 2 lateral branches, so it looks like a "T", the vertical part is only about 10" tall.
I notice that the laterals are getting longer, but the vertical is not getting that much taller. I'd like to get vertical growth so I can tie it to the support trellis. I guess I can bend the laterals upward, gradually, so they don't break off. Any suggestions?

Just tried them for the first time over the weekend. Taste is buttery, somewhat fragrant, extremely thin black skin, size on the small side. Anybody growing them?

I bought several cherimoyas recently, and noticed that some of them have seeds that are very soft. The fruits with hard seeds invariably taste much better than those with soft seeds. Is there a correlation between soft seeds & poor quality, hard seeds & much better taste?

Does it need cold protection? Overnight winter lows in my area can reach 30s briefly, usually in the 40s.
Also, some leaves' underside are black, the other side (that faces the sun) is green. What caused it to turn black?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is persimmon a hard tree to grow, in my area?

Hi,
Over the past 8 years, I've killed 5 persimmon trees. Bought from either Home Depot or Lowe's, both Fuyu and Hasya cultivars. I've tried planting them in different locations in the yard. Slight afternoon shade, full sun, elevated in a mound, at normal depth,..... They all withered at died after several months of nice growth, leafing out,... I suspect overwatering, but not entirely sure. I have one right now that was showing growth through spring and early summer, and the last 2 weeks the leaves wilted, yellowed, and fell. It's next to a jaboticaba that gets regular watering, so maybe too much water flows to the persimmon? I'd appreciate any advice about growing this thing, I'm gonna try again until I succeed.

Hi,
I know jackfruit grow easily in south FL, but here in central CA it's not. I've seen fruiting jacks in southern CA, but I'm not expecting that. I like the tree shape and foliage and will move it indoor in the winter and hopefully keep it happy that way. Then I ran across this website that implies fruiting is possible in a container. Is it? Has anyone seen a fruiting jack in a pot? Below is a photo of mine.

Tree is about 6' tall, has been in container its whole life, currently in a 35 gallon pot. I just noticed that it had a couple flowers, no idea how long those had been present, smell great though, that's what caught my attention. Thanks!

I'm very excited to try my hands at this, got a few questions:
[1] Is container planting even a feasible option?
[2] I've read that for some fruit trees, planting 2 or 3 in the same large hole is OK. How about for paw paw?
[3] My soil is clay, should I make a mound/raised bed?

I bought some over the weekend. They're very sweet and juicy. The color is all green, no hint of yellow or purple. From the looks, I thought they were not quite ripe, because I've never had any sweet, green plums. This one got me hooked.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's going on with my Mission fig tree?

Seems like overnight, or maybe a couple days at most, things went from healthy looking to dead. The tree has been in the ground for about 10 years, annual pruning to keep the size in check. As can be seen in the photos, there are 3 main trunks coming up from the ground. The dead/dying one is the rightmost, it's also the largest. There's some brown coloration at the bottom of the trunk, not sure if it's indicative of anything. Since I took the photos a few days ago, I've cut down that trunk to about a foot above the ground. The other 2 trunks seem to be healthy. Thanks for your opinions!

I was in the area for other reason, had some time to kill during the day, decided to drop by Mimosa for the first time. Pretty cool to see fruiting black sapote and sapodilla in containers, give me hope. 
On the other hand, I can't believe some of the asking prices

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need advice on how to prune a cherimoya tree.

Hi,
This Honeyheart has only given me about 5 fruits per season. The tree is about 5' tall, maybe 4 years old. I haven't really done much to it, basically just let it grow on its own. So now I've decided to prune it properly. First step was to strip off all the leaves. I have no idea which branches to remove. Please look at the photos.
"A" has some of the larger branches numbered for easier reference.
"B" shows some drastic pruning. Is that too much? Should I aim for something in between "A" and "B"? Which of the numbered branches should be removed?
What is your recommendation?
