Millet----thank you for your advice.

Container Man----thank you too.
I'm still very impressed with your Little Cado growing technique in wine barrel for 6+ years without repotting it.

Any idea what wrong with the 3 new leaves from this seedling?  They are cupping inward.  I sprayed Ag Micronutrients earlier today.

LoveToPlant, because I live in Colorado I grow all my trees inside my greenhouse.  It is a rather large greenhouse, that was originally built by our farm, to produce starts that would later be planted out in  the fields.   In the greenhouse I have 7 large in ground citrus trees of different cultivars, and one large in ground pomegranate tree, plus 15 different varieties of other citrus trees growing in 15 gallon air root pruning containers..  I also grow approximately 50 +- pineapples, plus the usual stuff such as tomatoes etc.
Would love to see the picture of your greenhouse.
How effective are the pruning pots?  Do you leave the plants inside the pots indefinitely or up pot them when needed?
Did you purchased air root pruner pots or painted inside them with copper hydroxide solution?

Most of my fruitlets are pinhead sizes.  I would guess they will not be ready until next fall.  This will be a weird harvest time for tangerines.  Will let you know.

Millet you grow your citrus inside the greenhouse?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fertilizer to make guava sweeter
« on: October 10, 2020, 01:20:17 AM »
Fertilize with 0-0-50 would help sweeten the fruits.  Don't water a week or two before harvest to thicken up sugar content inside the fruits.  This helps sweeten my guava fruits.  Hope this help.

Mango planting-
Is pine bark better then chips for soil mix and if so, why?
And is either dry or freshly chipped better?
I ask because i'm having another limb removed & chipped from tall pine to straighten it.
I'd have him blow chips in garbage pail.  I also have bark chips.
Pine needles i've been leaving as they fall around areca palms.

EddieF,  Hawkfish007 seems to have good hand with growing mangoes.  I would use his mixes: 50% construction sand from Lowes or HD store and 50% topsoil.

Storm,  thank you for your suggestions.  I did call all landscape supplies companies here in Oxnard and Camarillo but no luck.  They only carry small bark nuggets.  After searching the Internet, I found  Whittier Fertilizer and Landscape Supplies in Pico Riviera seem to have mini bark nuggets.  Though it is quite a drive for you from Orange County.  Have you ever checked them out?  They sell by the yard.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Papaya on a screened in porch
« on: October 08, 2020, 11:05:52 PM »
It will die if you transplant now.  It is too big to transplant because papaya's roots are small fibrous.
Best solution is to cut 2/3 of the plant off to encourage new shoots.  Then just only keep 1 new shoot grown from a bunch.  New shoot will flower for you right away.

This papayatree looks like Hawaii papaya.  My Hawaii lower trunks  has black ripples(streaks) like yours.
It's hermaphrodite.

I'm running out of space for in ground plantings.   I have in pots now are 2 cherimoyas, 3 figs, 3 tangerines  longan, 2 mulberries, 2 peach and plum, and 2 avocado trees.  Plan to put them in half barrel directly instead of up potted them gradually.

These will be in 5-1-1 mixes if I could get mini-bark nuggets.  The ideal nuggets size should be in between 1/8" to 1/4"

Sun flower seeds and .0177 lead pallet are referenced to the barks.

Those tiny nuggets seem difficult to obtain.  Have you been trying to recreate Al's 5-1-1 mixes as well?

At my local Home Depot they sell a bagged product labeled top soil... but the ingredients list claims timber and forest fines as the main constituents.
It appears to be mostly ground bark (By-product of the timber industry) and a small amount of sand.
This product is produced in Alabama... so it or an equivalent product may be available in CA.
Very economical too.

Kevin Jones

I believe products offer for sell by HD are different from State to State.  It only sells large and medium size barks here in CA unfortunately.  Thanks for your input.  Really appreciate that.

Hello, I have been trying to make 5-1-1 potting mixes for sometimes,  but can not find pine bark fined or small size pine nuggets.

Is there anyone known where can I purchase small pine barks in Ventura County area, preferably Oxnard?  TIA

No love?

California Honey tangerine is in ground for 28 years. It's a semi dwarf with approximately 5 feet tall

The other is Thai kaffir lime tree in the ground for 28 years as well.  I cut it down to 3 feet high and grafted it with Maiwa kumquat, Clementine de nules,  Florida Honey tangerine , and Tango
Approximately 4years ago.

Their both have trunks' diameter of about 4 to 4 1/2 inches.  Seem small for 28 years old, but it's true.

Should I take all newly set fruitlets off the trees?

Ps. I grew FL honey tangerine from seed 9 years ago and grafted a stick onto my keffir like tree

Millet,  your advice to fertilize or foliar feed citrus heavy with N in spring to induce flowers.  During that period, my tangerine fruits are not fully color, but juicy and sweet but not very sweet.

I did not fertilize during those period  due to what I read on the net.  fertilizing citrus or certain fruit trees with heavy  N before harvest stage will turn fruits sour.  In July,  I fertilized the plants with heavy N and Fe  after picked the rest of the fruits to size up the few marble sizes fruits which bloomed in spring.  It could be the reason they start to flower heavy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Longan new leave flush wilted
« on: October 07, 2020, 02:50:52 PM »
Summer in Oxnard, california is in low 80°s and that seems to be the only times that my Kohala flushes new leave.  It's flushes new leaves about 2Xs per year.  I spray Ag micronutrients from time to time but it doesn't have any affects on the plant.  I will upload photos if and when it starts to flush again.

I sprayed copper fungicide and  the newly flushed leave began to wilt with burned along the edges faster.  Maybe I put too strong of the solutions?

244
Can I foliar spray  manganese on the leaves, or only water in?

245
1) mangosteen
2) durian, long stem variety
3) green mango, kiew Sa voy variety
4) longan
5) persimmon non astringent

I repotted it 6 months after I purchased it and it has been in that container ever since.

Thanks.  Did you used Al's 5-1-1 inorganic soil mixed as growing media or something else?  I like the idea of not up potting to a bigger  container every yearly.
