Lychee & Longan Bloom in south Florida
« on: January 26, 2019, 09:36:40 AM »
I was giving a tour at Unbelievable Acres Botanic Garden a couple of weeks ago and noticed that about half of Gene Joyner's 20 lychee trees had bloom. I noticed yesterday that my Hak Ip was also producing bloom spikes. Here is a photo of one of Gene's Hak Ips:

And my Biew Kiew & Illian Longans are also showing bloom. Here is a photo of my small Illian Longan that I bought from BS Bullie at Excalibur a couple of years ago:

Thanks for the bloom update from Gene Joyner's Unbelievable Acres. Will he be making some ice cream this year?

No, there hasn't been a Tropical Fruit Ice Cream Festival at Unbelievable Acres going back about 10 years. The Palm Beach Chapter of the Rare Fruit Council still holds the annual event for their members and guests at Mount's Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach.
BTW, I heard Gene on the radio this morning (South Florida Garden Show, Sundays, 7 - 9 am, 880 AM) saying that all of his Lychee trees are in bloom and his Longans are starting to bloom as well.

For more information about Gene Joyner's garden that he started in 1970:  www.unbelievableacresbotanicgardens.org

:D I think the last real crop (more than a couple of pannicles) was either 2010 or 2011. Makes a really nice shade tree through :-).
