What is the "Giant Sugar Apple"?
« on: September 08, 2021, 12:18:49 PM »
Hi,
Han Sen is selling various nice seeds.  One of them caught my eye.  Something called "Giant Sugar Apple".   What is this?  Is this a hybrid of A. squamosa X reticulata?  Or is this a different species altogether?   I searched "Annona mucosa" but that points to Rollinia, which is a very different looking fruit.

Thanks!

Probably a hybrid that is more reticulata than squamosa, given its generally the larger of the two.

The picture looks like a selection of sugar apple Annona squamosa
I don't see anything in the picture that indicates a cross.
The fruit doesn't even look that large especially if you thin the fruit.

Thanks for the information.  It does look like a regular sugar apple fruit, except that it is larger than usual.  Maybe as Mike says, the fruit was thinned to obtain larger fruits.

Giant Philipines sugar apples are sugar apple x atemoya and han sens look to have the same crossing going on. Once atemoya is crossed in you can get big fruit. Nothing like a pinks mammoth max but still respectable size.

I agree with MikeT, it's either a PPC or Nuathong or a seedling of those. It looks nothing like a real sugar apple. A sugarlata, on the other hand, looks exactly like a sugar apple inflated 4 times.
