What is wrong with my sugar apple leaves?
« on: October 01, 2021, 10:41:56 PM »

Hi,,
What do you guys think is wrong with my sugar apple plant (Annona squamosa)?

I am guessing this is some sort of nuritional defficiency, but I don’t know what it could be…

The tree is in a 10 gallon pot.

Thanks

In Florida around now when the days get short enough the sugar apples
go dormant. In the Spring they push new leaves and start flowering.
Usually it is still very warm when they go dormant but the length of day light
triggers the pause. I don't worry about the leaves now. Are your daylight hours
decreasing?

Not really Mike.  The day length varies just a little.

About an hour ago I asked the owner of a nursery here, which is pretty knowledgeable.   She says that it is just a problem of feeding.   She recommended that I should add urea and 12-24-12 (which is very readily available here).  1/2 teaspoon or each weekly.  She has over 25 years of experience…

I am guessing that weekly feeding has to do with the fact that we get a lot of rain, and since I have this in pot, nutrients get washed away…

Day length varies from about 11:30 hours in January to about 12:30 in July…. So it it is not much….

As a matter of fact, when I was growing up, I wasn’t even aware that the length of the day changed…  ;)

From the sugar apples I've seen the leaves go yellow to brown when going dormant. This looks different to me.

I would still think the tree will go through a dormant phase and
defoliate and then put out new growth and flowers?
I have noticed the annonas need very little fertilizer.
Is that new growth or old leaves?

I got the same symptoms on my small trees, not just sugar apple. It was because I used too much surfactant when I sprayed fertilizer. Some trees can't stand too much surfactant.
If you didn't spray anything, then this could be something else.

It is fairly new growth.   I notched the bark and this branch came out closer to the ground.

No, I haven’t sprayed anything.

Its always good to find people in your area with experience growing the same plants.

Apparently it has leaf miner trails.  Leaf miners are only active for a couple of weeks;  there is nothing to be done now.

I am attaching a picture of the underside of a leaf.   You can see the trails .....
