Some mangos starting to push bloom in SW Florida
« on: December 09, 2021, 10:19:59 AM »
Dwarf Hawaiian and Maha Chanok are almost in bloom for me in Cape Coral.
Looks like Edgar is just starting to push some buds that I think will be bloom.
Last time it started pushing this time of year, it just kept blooming off and on. I was eating Edgar from late April until early August.
Anyone else have bloom yet? This will be the fourth time in 7 years that Maha has produced off season fruit. I have has Dec/Jan fruit and twice March/April in addition to the normal July main season. It likes to bloom when weather changes. We had a cool spell of a few nights in low 50s followed by a rain and that seemed to be enough. Oddly enough, when my Maha trees were young their first fruit were from off season bloom. Maybe this is why it keeps happening, does the tree remember it fruited successfully at that time of year? I remember a lot of hype about Chok Anon producing off season fruit, but Maha Chanok is doing it pretty regularly for me. Tastes better too....

It looks like a warm December this year.  Hopefully we'll get a cold front before the end of the month or in early January.

Our wee little NDM#4 pushed blooms. It's only been in the ground for about a year, so we will not let it hold fruit this year.

Agree.

The fallacy of a cold front being needed is once again disproved.

Many stressors can and do initiate bloom... IMO Cold is not an essential stressor as many other stressors exist.

About 1/3 to 1/4 of my trees that have been in ground 4+ yrs. have buds or bloom.

Anyone with trees this size/age in ground and if if if you want early bloom, make sure soil has a little moisture to aid bloom initiation (dry for weeks will probably slow or decrease chance of early bloom IMO)

However, being dry for weeks will transition & IMO probably become a stressor for initiating one of the later blooms, if desired.

Cold is a MAJOR stressor, but it’s not an essential stressor.

What are some other stressors besides cold?  Thanks.

Cold is a MAJOR stressor, but it’s not an essential stressor.
Even if our trees aren't absolutely dependent on it, our bodies/senses enjoy a little cold weather for a change!

Daylight length and barametric pressure are important catalysts

I am a little north in Lakeland, FL and I have most of my Mango varieties pushing, including Carrie, Cogshall, Mallika, Glenn, Keitt, Ice Cream, Peach Cobbler and Ugly Betty.  While I am prepared to cover all in the event of a cold snap, it could get ugly if the cold snap comes in late February or March. I doubt they would push again if it were to hit that late.   I also have a Madu Honey Gold that I grafted in January that is pushing panicles but it is still in a pot so I could protect that one more easily.  Not sure it is truly strong enough to hold fruit anyway.

Hoping for the best Winter season outcome for all of us.

Noticed significant flowering on Sugar Loaf. Yet to check all the others.

Abruptly dropped into the low 50's a few nights, several weeks ago.

In West Palm Beach, the night time low dropped into the 50sF 10 times between November 23rd and December 4th. That’s more than bough the stimulate bloom on quite a few varieties, particularly if their stems were mature (having stems that were say 3+ months old). And of course in areas north or west of us, the lows have been even cooler, so trees in these areas benefited even more.

Nonetheless this isn’t enough for a lot of trees in south Florida , and we’ll need to see some protracted cool weather in January or February for many of the trees here to bloom. The remainder of December appears to be quite warm.

I saw a Kasturi mango tree about 1/2 in bloom. This is very early for that tree.

I did a walk around today and a few trees were showing signs, some in clear bloom and some just starting.  It is not over the entire tree but clearly some flowers are coming in.
M4 tree and Ugly Betty and Fairchild (or is it Florigon?) branches appears to have been the earliest.  Chock anon is starting and so a a couple of others.
Hopefully others will pick up and we will have a decent year.

In addition to major blooming on SL, Glenn is now shooting flowers. Others look like they want to join.
