Fygee, listen to Sapote.
Plant seeds from the most vigorous varieties like sapote said Peach cobbler .
I propose Dupois Saigon i have a 2 year old seedling uncovered growing in our 117 degree heat..sun pretty much all day. It is however at my friends home that has flood irrigation every 2 weeks so im sure that helps. This seedling was uncovered all last summer also. The only mango i never had to cover in the summer. Only covered when we had a threat of frost. I just started dumping a 5 Gal Bucket of EDDHA iron on my mangoes this year and they perk up /green up and love it. In between also i give them a 5 gal bucket  liquid  Fish and kelp along with mulch and that is it. My Dupois Saigon seedling leaves are upright green big and non-droopy.
I am on the hunt now for Peach Cobbler seeds and cac and also more Dupois seeds / anything real vigorous to bring back to AZ when i head to Florida in a few days.
Plant seeds and forget about those grafted trees...i killed too many to tell.
I know it takes longer but you will be rewarded with a strong tree most likely that can take the severe elements we share.
I know of a lady here in Arizona that has maybe 12-15 seedling trees  20-25 ft tall that have been thriving for years ..that bear small sweet semi fiborous mangoes. She lives near the Mountains/ hiking trails
Her mother planted a Mango seed from Safeway supermarket 20 or so years ago and she just continued planting the seeds from that mother tree...all the fruits from the trees are the same and she does not want to graft.
Practice patience and plant seeds :)
Graft later after 4-5 years.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / YIKES ....$5.00/lb for mangoes
« on: June 11, 2021, 07:37:25 PM »
Hi guys is this the normal cost of this wonderful fruit in Florida at the farms at Florida now?
I was in Florida 2 years ago and it was $2.00 or $3.00 per lb
I will not disclose the name of the seller to hurt their business but i found this really high.
Anyway , i am headed to Florida next week and i want to purchase and taste different varieties.
Is this $5.00 lb the kind of prices i am going to experience??
Michael.

K-Rimes you know what you gotta do now RIGHT??

you got to ring door bell and ask questions
for example

Seedling grown or grafted ?.. i think seed
.What kind of seed if they remember?
how old?
What do you feed it with if anything?
When do the mango Ripen?
Taste and productivity?

Lastly...CAN I HAVE BUD WOOD????

C'MON MAN GET WITH THE PROGRAM...YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO...SPREAD THAT BUDWOOD ..LOL ;D

I have a 2 year old in ground seedling and a newly sprouted ( since may ) seedling growing at my friends yard .
These 2 readily shot up out the ground with multiple trunks.
My 2 year old seedling is in full sun.  I protected from the heat last year , this year i noticed a big growth flush during our heat and let it be no protection for the whole summer in 110-115 degree heat we have been having. ***Huge caveat is that these plants are in my friends flood irrigated yard around other  tree mostly citrus**** . The older seedling gets the full afternoon sun.
Of all the seedlings i planted in the hole (in may) along with 10 other seeds ( store bought kent/ haden) only the dupois seed i got from Florida is growing and growing well. This is in a more protected area of my friends yard.

Just wanted to share my observations.

Satya...Shew ya Za ma is a great mango.
Retry that one next year.
I had these at the F&S park 2 years ago.
Trying to grow seedlings out here in Phoenix and that one is a must to graft for me down the line.

I have had great success with cleft grafting my inground 6 year old guava Bush. The best bet is spring...

Study and know when the tree gives its first growth flush in spring
A month or two before that known upcoming growth flush feed the tree and heavily water it.
Drive your neighborhood and beg for scions when its about to flush
Graft as many different varieties that you can get a hold of.
Keep the tree hydrated during growth flush and whlie grafting
My result this year i had over 50-100 fruit here in Arizona for the first time.
Not one of the fruit were from the grafts i did because they were done in the spring.
I would say 75-80% of my spring grafts made it through our tough 110-115 degree heat ...pretty  long and very harsh summer we had , i even noticed a lot of natives dying due to the prolonged
  heat.
The key to me was early feeding b4 growth flush, good hydration for the tree and good scions and timely grafting just as the tree started to push new growth.

Hope that helps.   Ohh also heavy free woodchip mulch i dumped around the tree after feeing it and watering heavily.

I love both but I like ValCarrie better...i think it to me its more complex.
Val Carrie, if i remember is also a bigger fruit kinda wierd shaped. I do not know of the production ...probably produces less than the Carrie in that when i go to Florida to buy mango i do not see a lot of Val Carrie available..maybe its later and i miss the height of its season.

Too pricey Brian....people are getting laid off already.
At that price you gonna end up throwing much of your fruit away.
Lower that bro!

Anyone has any to sell ??
Has to have some sweetness to it.
Thanks

Pine islander , approx how many frozen bags are in that freezer?
Do you favor freezing a specific variety / type and why?

Are these trees all  growing at a public park for all to harvest if they want?

You friend managed to forage all those mangoes? Are there mangoes growing wild in areas around you?
If so i'm moving to Australia.

I love that mango. I tasted it 2 years ago and the tree was loaded at the time. It's a delicious mango. Last year i don't remember tasting it ...don't think there was much on the tree or i came too late for any fruit?
Anyway , Alex is this an Indian mango or SE Asian any info on it? I remember you saying you got budwood from this tree and i hope you will have fruit next year.
Thanks for the pics and info.

« on: October 10, 2019, 11:40:04 AM »
Easy, send Alex (SQUAM) and Cookie Monster a pm on the question you have. They are 2 good resources. As far as the new varieties are concerned they are so new that some of the trees that have been growing has not reached full maturity as yet....so hard to tell size wise. I'm sure those 2 may have some idea about a few other varieties that have been out longer such as Sweet Tart and Lemon Zest.

Yep, normal . I got 3 in ground seedings like this . A Dupois seedling , A Kent ( thought was supposed to be Mono) , and a random neighborhood mango seedling from WPB FL.
Leaves have just hardened off and  i'm going to cut out 3 or so and leave the 2 furthest from each other to grow.....
Good luck with your seedling

Hey Botanicus, thanks very much for the link . How can a regular citizen get a few scions from the UF. ? What is the process?
I'm in Phoenix Arizona and a friend of mine has Huge Nectarine and Peach trees i would like to graft a few of these  low chill varieties on.
Let me know.
Mike!!
