The tree is young. It flowered in March 2021 and made a first crop of 8 fruits, ripe 10 months later. No flowers in 2022. In March of this year it flowered again, but dropped them all. Now this. Trying to understand this creature.

Just let it do it's thing as it becomes more mature it will flower and when it want to according to climate. Young fruits formed now will be fine as long as you don't get hard prolong freeze.

I've tried that before with a Duke 6 scion on mexican rootstock and i buried below graft to see if Duke would grow own roots but no luck. Still have tree with Koala grafted on one trunk and Duke on other trunk. If I remember right I believe I sliced into scion and put rooting hormone on before burying.

I have 5-plants in ground for years the oldest one's 20yrs plus with very sour fruit and one grafted to a female scion wood a friend had but no fruit yet. Most promising is a seedling from sweet fruited plant that used to be a San Diego Botanical Garden which is about 4' tall but no flowers yet. Had a sweet variety from Marta but was small and it died, hoping to get another one from Marta. Mature trees have taken down to teens one year without harm.
Grafted in Jan. many years ago and one took out of 3-grafts.

I've used new shoot growth for years never did like bark graft because they need staking for so long. I use schick single edge razor blade on the new shoots in Dec.-Feb. for best percentage of takes, soft wood grafts which I use whip & tongue I wrap first with buddy tape then rubber band on graft section and put white paper bag over graft until leaves start pushing then open bag more and more as weeks go by until fully hardened to full sun.

Great Nate, so you got some butia e. from Dennis, cool he's nice guy I have fruiting butia capitata from his selected varieties he talked about back in 2011 I think at CRFG conference. Very juice tropical taste.

This is a good question as I have a 'eugenia missions' that looks the same from seed from Marcos many, many years ago and I know now he sells a COTRG- orange fruited species so, maybe Marco's could answer this for us if he sees post??

I've used heating mats for years i think it helps on many tropical seeds but also coming around to closed bag with moist vermiculite to start seeds in warm place. i do have a g.h. but live in cool Spring-Summer area so g.h. helps with zone pushing plants. I think many people over look stratification technique because even some sub-tropical seed need heat-cool cycles to germinate well. Just saying you need to take in your seed cycle since coming off of tree which can be hard to do no knowing how some folks store seeds you have to think that reliable seed dealers do the right storage.

Kevin, My m. californica has died back too all the grafts from excellent wood from Brad finally died some seemed to be going to push then failed. I cut back all the trucks one is still green at ends so time will tell. But I'm leaning towards Kevins, way of thinking lost two  grafted plants from original buy now this is 2nd time i grafted to m californica with no success so might be time to say no more for me too  :( :P
I applaud all the folks who have successfully grown yang mei and I wish you all fruitful future growing  ;) 8)

I keep a Holiday and Hellen at about  8' tall but you need to prune often some varieties like Reed would be hard to keep small like Fuerte too. But I have a 25 yr old Fuerte avocado that I keep at 8' tall but has spread sideways by 16-18'. If your willing to stay on your trees and prune or tip constantly then you can do it but it's work.

My thoughts also, I was in L.A. area for family get together week-end of big tropical storm and wanted to go to Champa nursery on Sunday before I went home to Central Coast and they were all closed because of storm  :'(
