One more alphanso x exotic variety hybrid is Konkan samrat mango.
Its Alphanso x Tommy atkins cross. Two best commercial varieties of the world.
Same season like alphanso (April May)
Fruit size is bigger( 400 gms).
Regular bearing.
Unfortunately it is yellow greenish in colour same as Alphonso, not like red Tommy atkins.
May not be a commercial hybrid. But can be a good parent for future alphonso hybrids. Taste, shelf life , red colour, early ness, regular bearing genes can be inherited in next hybrid.

My konkan samrat plant.

I want to know why you are you preferring late red mangoes? I am just curious.
Have you tasted the 'planet' mangoes by Dr Richard Campbell. I think all of them are early.

Arunika mango can be better alternative than Ambika. It is prettier ( more red) , taste wise better , tree is more dwarf ( can be planted in pot),  earlier than Ambika. The fruit size is smaller than Ambika.

Ah ping and Irwin can be best parent for red fruit traits and early season. I dont know about theit taste.

Oh wow thank you for the insight. That looks like a promising collection. Id be interested to try each of them and compare. would arunika be your preferred red mango? I have Irwin in my grove already but ah ping is on the top of my list as well.

Arunika is not my preferred red mango. Its taste is better than Ambika  but still well below best mangoes from India. Also arunika is late season mango.
I will prefer early red mangoes like Irwin, Ah ping. Which are adapted to your florida region. NMBP 1243 is earlier than Irwin. So its my dream red mango.  :D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Amrapali leaves problem
« on: August 29, 2023, 09:36:37 PM »
The young leaves of my amrapali tree , when soaked in rain looks like this. Any body knows why this happens.
The young leaves emerge in summer do not show this problem.
The tree is shaded by big trees. Here rain is heavy from june to sept. Humidity is high.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tender coconut
« on: August 04, 2023, 10:36:53 AM »
How to identify which is tender coconut and which is mature one? Tender coconut when picked too early does not have sweetness. If picked too late the flesh becomes thick. So when to pick it from tree so flesh is soft and water is sweet?

Results will be interesting to see since I am growing only five mango cultivars and only
one of those mangoes of mine appears on this poll list and that's 'Nam Doc Mai #4' and
anyway, my five mangoes are all too small to have given me any ripe fruit yet.

And for the record my choices were made for dwarf and semi-dwarf cultivars due to
space limitation in my yard.

Poll awaaaay y'all......

Cheers!

This poll will help people with limited space to select varieties.

For the people with limited space, this thread is useful.
I am planning to start poll about top 3 mangoes tastewise.
If any other variety to be included feel free to reply.
It looks like you need to include CeciLove!  I had a Providence tree that produced mangos that tasted and looked like Kent on steroids.  Exceptional fruit, but supposedly too disease-prone, like Kent.  I had no problems, but the tree was removed by new owners right after it first started producing.
Yes will add Ceci love. Also alampur baneshan is quite popular.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to search polls

How to serch on this forum, polls conducted. Like if I want to search previous all polls regarding top mango varieties . How can I do it?

Few years back I saw youtube video, claiming Sensation is called Lal badshah in Pakistan.

but Goa Mankur mango and Maya from Israel have very good taste. I purchased Goa mankur and Maya graft from them and planted near my house.

In my opinion Israeli Maya grown commercially is very average classic flavor mango, don't set your expectations too high.
Yes I am not expecting much from Maya . But two different people named it at two different ocassions.
There is old research paper about exotic varieties (planted in India) compared with kesar. Only maya scored better in Organoleptic score than kesar.
http://iskv.in/wp-content/themes/iskv/volume-pdfs/bfd2f21c0805ca9084dd7bf3526af62bjkv-5-1-020.pdf

Hence I planted it.

Hi SHV,
Can you please continue this review thread, this year.

25
Thanks for this info about Mancurad. I bought a box of Mancurad from Mangozz this year and all of them had internal breakdown issues.

I have yet not tasted Goa Mankur mango. I will write its taste comparison when I will taste one.
It fetches better price than Alphonso in Goa State. Goan people talk with pride about their Mancurad mangoes. So its must be very good. It has poor shelf life, hence it is not sold outside Goa state.
I did not like Mallika taste. May be it was not at its prime stage. Mallika has creamy buttery taste while dussheri has mild citrus flavour. Hence I will hope dasheri will fruit. Also I have planted amrapali tree, other hybrid of dasheri.
Lemon Meringue is not available here. Hope in future I will try it.

Internal breakdown or spongy tissues are difficult to detect.. Alphonso , mancurad, mallika fruits may get affected by this defect.
