Tropical Fruit Discussion / Top 5 jaboticaba to grow in limestone soils
« on: January 04, 2022, 07:41:20 PM »
I've seen a million threads like this but with mangos.
I'm sort of surprised there hasn't been much talk with all the hype the last few years.
I'm no expert on plinias or myrciarias but I'm familiar with some of the older ones.

So the question is if you had room to plant five in the ground without a frost concern what would you pick?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Import lychee trees from China?
« on: December 16, 2021, 02:01:20 PM »
All this Yangmei talk has me wondering about the possibility of doing a group order for Lychee trees.
I searched around for a little bit on google but I couldn't find much information.

Can any of the forum members who have experience importing trees from China give me a breakdown of the process involved?
I'm completely unaware of how to start.

I'm sure there are plenty of new varieties there for sale and I'd guess there is enough interest here to order a few hundred.

I have some sapodilla seedling (Alano) growing in deep insert seedling plugs (~1.5" square, by 4" deep).
The seedlings are like 4-6" by my estimation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Brazilian mango ID
« on: July 18, 2021, 01:20:48 PM »

Got a few mangos through a person I know.
They said it is a Brazil mango and the tree is dwarfish.
It's fruiting now so maybe slightly late season.
I thought it might be itamacara but this was a classic tasting mango.
I assume it planted by seed but it might be poly.

Anyone have a clue as to what it could be.
It's actually pretty good. And fiber free.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / J-14 Mango release
« on: March 18, 2021, 02:22:09 PM »
I've been out of the mango loop for the last few months.

Anyone know if ZHPP released J-14 mango.
I was pleasantly surprised at how consistently good it was from them last year. (Not at the LZ level but for my taste a notch below)
Tasted like a Zinc Haden mix to me (from what I remember)

Basically looking to buy a tree or budwood eventually.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruiting T. cacao in South Florida
« on: March 02, 2021, 01:07:27 PM »
I know this is probably not that rare anymore but I finally managed to get my cacao to fruit.
I'm not really doing anything to protect it. Just planted it on the side of my house.

Would much prefer mangosteen but we'll see in a few more years

I wanted to trim my trees before February is over so I'm offering a few different scions.
I haven't fruited any of them, most of the trees are big enough now where I will begin to hand pollinate this year.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Selling: UF Best Peach scions
« on: January 21, 2021, 06:39:27 PM »
It took a while but I was finally able to locate a UFBest peach on floriguard rootstock.
I'm reasonably confident that this is the real deal.
I found three tags with the same name between the tree and the soil.
Got it from home depot a few years back.

I'm probably going to get rid of this in a year or two, even it took a while to find.
The reason is fruit fly larva.

Anyways the tree is budding out now so if anyone wants some LMK

$2 per scion, minimum is 10 pieces.
shipping is $8 for a flat rate box.
US only.

Citrus General Discussion / Growing Citrus in ground in Soflo...Progress
« on: January 20, 2021, 04:17:53 PM »
I know the common thread amongst growers down in South Florida is to basically give up on citrus.

I'm just curious if anyone is still pursuing them, at least for homeowners?
Looking for some tips or tricks that might have been discovered recently.
Citrus seems to cover the Winter/Spring season pretty well.

I figured planting on a mound and apply sulfur every year would be a start.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2021 Mango Season (Florida)
« on: November 25, 2020, 06:21:14 PM »
Between the late cold and the late rains, our growing season was extended this year.  My Garcinias liked it though.

I was losing hope but it looks like we'll have a cold front next week.
Low 50s for a few days might be enough to get some flowers going in a few weeks. To bad half my trees have pretty recent flushes

I'll update near the end of December.

49
I have a bunch of Neelam mango seedlings that I really have no use for anymore.
I planting them for breeding and selected the ones I wanted based on sap smell. 6 out for 50

Anyway, I figured I can graft some small trees in spring and send them out in summer.
I should be able to fit 1 in a medium box and 2 in a large.

$30 for 1 not including shipping
$50 for 2 not including shipping

If anyone is interested let me know
