Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Laguna hills potting mix
« on: August 04, 2019, 05:53:34 AM »
Hey brad

Top pot gets an A in my book.

His store is nearby and I've bought from him before. I like it for potted plants because it drains quickly and allows me to water regularly without worrying too much about root rot. This is especially helpful for rooting cuttings.

I believe there is charcoal of some sort in the soil mix. It's lighter than dg but it doesn't hold onto water very well (will definitely dry out in a day on a hot day). It's hard to overwater it . I'm not sure it's as rich as promix but promix definitely retains too much water and can't be watered as regularly. Worst mistake I ever made was taking cuttings started in promix and transferring to top pot. The top pot drained water directly to the promix which held onto the water and wouldn't let go. More than 100 rotted cuttings.

Surprised to hear that Brad. No fruit set or are you accounting for fruit drop after high heat? Mine has a good 20 on it and it's smaller than yours

Heres the holiday tree that is flushing nicely.  I figure it will be 10 years before this tree can hold a decent load.  Maybe I will get 1 or 2 this year.

Looks like a lot of flowers are starting to form on my oro negro for the first time. The tree is 5 years old, 8 feet wide 5 feet tall so I hope a lot of fruit holds

My oro negro set several fruit, first time it's done that.

My Jan Boyce is holding lots of fruit but she'd all leaves and doesn't look like it's in any rush to releaf and protect itself. It's been a couple of months now and the tree is so darn leggy.

I bought a bunch of no name ones that aren't really propagated

One called 'tal', reportedly excellent flavor but every few years some avos will have fiber . Jf said it was her sons favorite and is in her yard. Research name is TX something.

I bought malama to replace my dead and one.

Bob avocado and Schindler avocado. Dont know mich about
Them.

Marshalline avocado also.

These are the ones they usually propagate just 1 of (except malama) and so the budwood doesnt really get passed around. I was trying to find a sally avocado but it wasn't grafted this year. I bought the only tree last year as it came really highly recommended but it fried. I did manage to get some budwood though and it's still green.

Looking good there. Hope those avos sprout up. I acquired a few new varieties from green scene recently. Hopefully they will grow well this year.

Mark, yes you can hand pollinate. You can use a q tip or or something soft or a dead bug trapped in a spider web. You can then light brush against s male flower then come back to pollinate female flowers

You can also just pull off a Male flower and walk around and pollinate female ones later on

Out of curiosity...Which varieties did you get from green scene? I missed it this year...I have attended the two previous years before.

Here are photos of my reed (the bigger one) and sharwil (slinking along the ground).

Like mark, mother nature also did some pruning for me, something called the hot knife technique.

Bonita creek has it, I think they buy from eli/subtropica

[Not discounting rootstock or other factors but sir prize is a beast. One prominent member here grafted sir prize onto an established tree and now the sir prize size is bigger than the original. My sir prize is also growing phenomenally well growth rate similar to Pinkerton but more bushy and less droopy

This is a side by side comparison of the two trees  I have.  I planted the Sir Prize 6 weeks earlier so it has a head start.  It grow by 8 inches so far.  The Reed has shed all the leaves and doesn't look that good right now.

H Barath, good tips.  I'll consider those.  jtnguyen333- do you have any pics of your trees?  I assume you gave both the same soil mix treatment and exposure.  I pretty much used a similar mix to what you did, but I did mix-in the compost and wormcastings, etc. in the top 6-9".  I haven't yet setup the sprinkler subsystem for these trees.  I'm trying to decide between soaker hoses beneath the mulch vs. over head sprinklers, or slow drip.

I bought my tree from Gary including a reed. It was stunted last year but this year is loving life.

I mounded my trees and mulched heavily. I have a fertigation system leading into a drip system and each tree also has a Microsprayer.

Re rootstock,  eli at subtropica has everything that Brokaw had and is willing to sell to the public. He prefers day (west I dian) rootstock

My clonal rootstock trees have been slower than seedling rootstocks to establish but they seem to take off and look absolutely healthy.

Nice looking tree! Can't wait to see how it grows

91
Last time we did group order most didn't want in so we did a 4 way split. Requirement again is min. 4 bags and we need 40 bags. I will take 6. I am sure JF will take a few. Others? Let me. Open the post again

I can take 6 if the post is still open.

92
Not when I touched it. But it seems like it fell off between taking the picture and putting the phone down and I didnt want to go digging in the soil.

At first I thought it was a massive Japanese beetle grub 🤮

93
Seemed firmly attached to the roots but as soon as it touched soil it disappeared and got lost in the rubble.

Any thoughts? Is this a parasite?

My very young mango tree, should I cut it as soon as it flowers? need advice from our experienced local mango growers :

Let it fruit till its a size of a pea. Then u remove the pea-sized mango.

If u take out flower now. Chances are it will try to re-flower...

I know simon talked about this. Use the search button for a more descriptive post.

Usually removing the flowers this early would result in new flowers, but it's been so hit that my trees are mainly pushing out all leaves. It may be worth a shot if you are impatient

I personally would wait... but I have a large orchard to obsess over and can find lots of other plants to distract me.

If I had to stare at that set of flowers every day I probably would pinch some off and see how it goes.

If you use Paypal, there are no issues- Paypal and Ebay protect buyers and refunds are almost always given for a defective or mislabled product.

But as far as seeds, its hard to ask for a refunds months later...after your seeds have grown into plants

I think PayPal only protects you for 6 months, which is usually not long enough for fruiting and confirmation if varietal

foliar feeding should be safe. Have you had any flushes since buying it? I would just make sure you have the concentrations right so you don't burn the leaves. If you do get leaf burn, then your concentrations were too high.

Looking to add to my selections at my small community farmers market I am planting a few avocados. I put a Brogden in the ground yesterday on a mound and have a Hass and Sir Prize arriving next week. I decided on them after reading some of the posts on here since I do not eat them myself. Some last minute research over the weekend and I noticed that the UF Ag extension doesn't recommend either of the last two for growing in Florida but doesn't say why. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Tagging onto Brad's comment, there may be some fungal or disease pressures that cause these to either fruit poorly or have poor quality fruit.

When I come across new varieties I like to hop over to Carlos's webpage myavocadotrees.com and see his blog posts and trials. Unfortunately, most of the ones I am interested in are not completed as the trees either fruit poorly compared to some of this others or are heavily affected by fruit rot, etc... so they won't end up in his orchard and so the trial is completed. My orchard is small-scale and will have some production this year with more in the coming years but I am in avocado territory in CA so my situation is different from yours.
