Tropical Fruit Discussion / South Miami Road trip: Mission Caimito!!
« on: October 31, 2021, 05:44:45 PM »
I am planning a road trip to Miami next weekend. The mission objective is to go to Lara Farms and get some of his Caimito and Canistel cultivars and what ever else turns my head. If he's game I will try to purchase some scions of his Campbell cultivar of White Sapote. Any suggestions of any other places nearby I should hit? I would love to pick up a Sugar belle citrus while I am there. The last stop that day will be Pokey's as usual. Come guys! Help old man Carolina hunt!

I will definitely put those nurseries on my list. What is any our your opinions about the best time of year to visit Lara or any of the other nurseries?

I'm in the Piedmont of NC. Right now I have Artic Frost and Orange Frost and Bumper in the Ground. They survived last winter in the ground and COVERED. I also have a Ponkan in the ground that survived. Roll the dice. You never know try protecting them for a year or two them let it rip. Contact Eyeckr. I think he is zone 8 and has some outside.

I have 3 all at least 3 yrs old and none have ever fruited. The flavor is very fruity in the front end but has a very vegetable taste at the end that reminds me of beets or maybe spinach. It's that minerally "dirt" taste that vegetables sometimes have. I love them but these are the "risks".

Can Kerji and Shiranui pass the NC winter? or what will be the effective protection for winter?

Super nice guy, Mr Boyd is. I bought some Keraji and shiranui from him last month.
They are too young to try. I will put them in the unheated greenhouse or in the basement for a couple of years.

Ok guys. I am about to go hunting but I need to know how the Sugar Belle tastes. What are your impressions? This is my third year growing citrus and the only one of my plants that have fruited are the Bumper and the meiwa. The meiwa was pretty good:sweet inside and out. The Bumper was nice: easy peel, sweet but not sugary with a very typical tangerine flavor. Is Sugar Belle sweeter than your average tangerine? I see it being sold as an "orange" and a "mandarin".

Received mine yesterday too, nice and healthy.

Concur that its worthwhile,  multiple sources sure helps achieve having at least one tree. Maybe we did things just a bit out of order as the train of thought you all have posted, seedlings first as potential root stock then tree/scions second. Now its time for them to grow and be ready.

You guys rock! I'm not as clueless about sub tropical fruits after reading stuff here for the past year.

Ken, it does look like a modified cleft graft.

I received my Yangmei seedlings from Wildlands farm and nursery yesterday and Nate did a great job packaging the plants. The seedlings look like they’re several months old and about 3 inches tall. Although these seedlings cost as much as the grafted plants we received from China, it’s worth the time saved in acquiring and sprouting these seeds myself which can take over a year.

I hope to grow out these seedlings and then graft the named varieties onto them once they reach the appropriate size. Here are a few pictures.

East coast will not be left behind. I just ordered two!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Beware - I lost 100 USD

The translation here is the Denmark Gov't was handing out free Covid money to U and everybody else. U then proceeded to blow yr new found wealth  (allegedly $100) on buying seeds from a  remote someone thousands of miles away in some tropical locale. You did not get your seed satisfaction.

In my book just look at this as your donation n devotion to the poor in the t3rd world who are affected by (craptastical) climate change.
Where he/she got the money from is irrelevant. There was a contract that was broken.

Thanks for the update. What scions was she selling? If she stole I hope she will be banned.

Has anyone here tried top working and unproductive or undesirable plant? I have two that are shy bearers and that don't taste very good.

413
Yellow and with seeds. I buy my seeds online.

I have had a few experiences that make me lean toward the tree that has fruit and the one that has not. One would be the trees that I have bought that have been duds. Anything that takes more than 5 years to fruit is not what I am interested in. I think almost anybody who buys fruit trees wants to eat fruit. What I have seen is if the plant is already fruiting you at least know it will not make you wait too long. The other thing is cultivar. I have had someplants labeled as "red" but there in fact "green".

415
Plant them.

Ok, since you are growing in pits, why be so aggressive?  If they NEED to be uppotted, than so be it but maybe select trees, when possible, that are not at that stage.  A smaller tree that does not require instant uppotting will be a healthier tree in the long run.

As for spraying chemicals,  if the tree gas pests or disease, then again, so be it.. but, as with the tree size, why select trees that are coming with these issues?
In general I try to pick the trees I buy on a few factors:
  • Vigor
  • Caliper size of the trunk
  • Is it already fruiting in the pot
The issues with bugs is that I don't want to transport anything new my state and I know I have checked for bugs that I didn't find until I got back home. I use a fungicide because of issues I have had before. I haven't seen any ill effects.

I wish I could plant them all but I am growing things outside of zone. I sacrificed a white sapote last year. Tangerines survived the North Carolina winter. Mr Sapote bit the dust. The next thing that will be tested is an avocado and a Cherry of the Rio Grande.

416
Does anybody else un-stake their plants? I usually un-stake anything that doesn't seem to need it.

417
Most of my plant are in pots so I wanted to ask other forum members what there regimen was in hopes of gaining knowledge.

I usually repot the plant to a larger potsize and spray for bugs. When I was buying plants from a particular nursery I would always spray with fungicide because everything  I brought back from them ended up with fungus.

418
It's been a long time and I don't remember the website but I am sure if you search you will find it. I believe the place was in Belgium or France.

419
I don't see any signs of the erinose mites.  Tree needs some general TLC.  Keep it watered well and if need be, drench with a Miracle Grow liquid fert to help it get going.  Dont let it dry out.

If it did have the erinose mites, you should sure as hell return it and report to USDA but from what I can see, its not the case here.  Just a somewhat neglected tree.

Hey when you say "drench" What do you mean? You mean like with the kind that goes in a hose sprayer or do you mean mix it up in a bucket and poor it over? What concentration do you suggest?

420
Did the plant look like that when you bought it or was this a one day steep decline?

421
Yep. He's a nice guy. I am looking for an already planted tree.

422
Does anybody know an online seller with kerajis?

423
I think I will pass. Their website has some roll the dice prices but they didn't really have all I wanted. For some reason you cannot get those varieties in Florida. I will take my own advice and take a trip to the west coast.

424
Looks like nobody has bout from him. Roll the dice on $100 fruit fiend habit or not?

425
Man......I royally screwed up. It was Mr Brittain from Nolin that passed away. Cliff is alive and kicking. I have to man up and take my lumps. I apologized to him and I apologize to all of you as well.

Well, he said they got some huk kam wood but it was in not good condition. He will contact me if he gets some grafted up.
