Passiflora Ligularis / Sweet Granadilla
« on: December 02, 2016, 09:52:02 AM »

Just wondering if there is anyone out there in Southern California that has had success with Passiflora ligularis - Sweet granadilla. Just purchased a couple of them and any hints or tips on growing them would be appreciated. I have done a search about it but most results came back with negative results and most people saying it will not grow well in SoCal.

I bought them like that as seen on the picture from Exotica in Vista, CA. They are a bit bigger now after about 10 days of having them.

I can grow Giant Granadilla in San Jose, CA (NorCal).   You can definitely grow Sweet Granadilla in SoCal.  Check out the link above.

They look healthy! Did you pre-treat the seeds before planting like scarifying?

I didnt grow them from seed. I bought them like that.  I brought them inside my house and placed them in front of a window facing the south as it seems its going to be constantly in the 40s from here on out.

Do you know anybody selling them by any chance? I'd love to have at least one...

Reviving an old thread. I bought fresh fruits last fall and sprouted seeds recently. Did you get them to flower and fruit? I vaguely remember ppl say it's hard to get sweet granadilla to flower. Thank you very much.

The best environment for P. ligularis appears to be semi-coastal SoCal in the shade.  So if you let it grow up (in the shade of) a big tree like an avocado or white sapote is ideal.  It's really wind sensitive and frost sensitive, but relatively drought tolerant.

I remember Ben Poirier in Fallbrook growing them at his place. I’m not sure if he still sells the vines or not you’d have to call him to see .

Did it ever flower for you? I'm getting a little pessimistic that when I asked around, people who grow seedlings never got it to flower let alone fruit. Apparently not suitable for our climate.

It does fruit in LA. The fresh fruits first became available last year in LA, so most of the seedling growers wouldn't be getting flowers just yet, except for a few like barath and the guy that fruited it in LA.

I'm sure there'll be lots of people fruiting it from seed in a couple of years.

Apparently much more difficult than P. Edulis. Fingers crossed.

I got it to flower a few years back, but never set fruit.  But this was on a windy rooftop garden in the East Bay, which isn't an ideal microclimate for it. A decade back there were posts on Cloudforest from people who were fruiting it in Coastal Orange County.

You might give it some Sul-Po-Mag and also some P, and withhold Nitrogen.  They also seem to really hate dry winds, so on windy days you might spray them down.

How are your plants doing?  I'm looking to buy some vines, but curious if they've survived in SoCal.  Have they flowered?

Hi All,

Is there any word on cross-pollination for Passiflora ligularis?  Mr. Google has many mixed results.  I have 8 vines in 100L bags on the fence of my chicken run in Brisbane, Australia.

Cheers,
Christian

I’m curious as well. I only have one that survived and it’s about to flower.

In a Passiflora biological taxonomy document I read a few years ago, they grouped it into the Passiflora "Super-Section Laurifolia / Series Tiliifolia", which would maybe suggest that those in the same Super-Section and/or Series would make for the best cross pollinators.  Looking through the list of Passiflora species in that Super-Section, these are the ones that are more commonly known:

P. gabrielliana
P. laurifolia
P. nigradenia
P. nitida
P. tolimana
P. venusta
P. alata
P. phoenicea
P. quadrangularis
P. maliformis
P. serrulata
P. triloba

Yes. The Ligularis are still alive and growing. I saw a flower in late February maybe? I did not take a picture of it because i figured it was finally going to continue to flower but that was the only one i saw, I haven't seen any other flowers since that one time . I recently just saw the first flowers on my Frederick a couple of days ago so I will check later today to see if I see any flowers at the top of my pergola for the Ligularis.
