Is This PPK?
« on: June 25, 2021, 04:08:30 PM »

I bought this tree as a PPK three years ago and this is the first time I’ve let it hold fruit.  I’ve never had a chance to try PPK so I can’t compare it to anything but I was under the impression that it was smaller and earlier. It has some wavy leaves but they’re not all wavy.

Here are some PPK I picked recently. The tree started ripening fruit about 2-3 weeks ago.  Flavor is excellent.  No resin.  Very refreshing with the lemon/citrus flavor concentrated near the skin.  The flesh sometimes gets a little gelatinous.  I haven't tasted all the newer Zills or the more exotic varieties from, say, India, but I would guess PPK is a Top-Twenty Mango.  These were grown approximately 9 miles from the coast in north Broward County.  The fruit and tree are clean--no MBBS or other issues.  I didn't pay attention to the leaves.  I will when I go back to pick more fruit. And post pictures.

(My hands are medium in size.)

I thought the leaves of PPK had wavy margins.

Just ate a mango in My hood that looks IDENTICAL in shape and size but was yellow at full ripe. thought it was Carrie but no freckles and bright yellow all around, and it tasted very simaler, rich, complex and sweet, dripping. Almost like a great Angie but more floral. I sent to a very knowledgeable guy named Satya and he wasn’t sure either. Good luck I hope it tastes the same as the one I had.

(My hands are neither small nor large--average for an under-six-foot male.)

Thanks John! I’m at the northern end of mango county and a couple weeks behind south Florida so that makes me feel better about the timing.  I already harvested ripe Fruit Punch, Cac, and Venus so it seemed late but those were all first time fruiters too and maybe were early. I’m over 6ft and have large hands, also my fruit seems wider than all the pictures I’ve seen but that could just be the angle.

Fruit shape is wrong for PPK. I have 3 mature trees and planting 20 more this summer they are in high demand by buyers.

I have had a sneaking suspicion that it might be Mallika. Not what I wanted but it could be worse, still a citrus mango. Figuring out when to pick them is going to be rough since I don’t know what it is and I could be one of the really tricky ones!

I have a mallika and the fruit are much bigger?
They will turn yellow on the tree eventually but you should be able to
watch the stems and when they start to turn brown the mango is easy
to pick. In my area I have tried to pick them green and wrap in newspaper and
I have let them ripen on the tree and there is not much difference in taste.
This is my second season and I was looking for a little spice in the
flavor but mine are all pretty much sweet. When your fruit ripens on your
tree you should be able to tell better what you have.

I dont think the fruit in the OPs post are anywhere near full sized and ripe.

Mallika will not have any spice.  Picked ripe and its super sweet with an creamsicle like taste (with possibly a hint of perfectly ripe cantaloupe).  Pick or let ripen at the wrong time and it can have a vegetal carroty taste

It does indeed look like Mallika, but for the size.
Can OP provide more information?
At that size, I thought perhaps Taralay but its more likely just a small Mallika.

Fruit shape and foliage are totally wrong for Taralay.

This is the first year I’ve let this tree hold fruit and it’s probably still too small (I got impatient after three years and was starting to suspect it had been mislabeled).  That combined with the really dry spring we had wouldn’t surprise me that the fruit is undersized. Also why I was thinking it was too big for PPK.  I’ve had Mallika before so hopefully I can pick it at the right time and see if it tastes right.
