Author Topic: Any info on Apricot Mango? (Read 3290 times)

This was the second year I've had Apricot Mango and I really like the fruit. I've read TAF's description of it, but wanted to know if anyone had any other info on it, namely productivity and growth habit? It appears to be monoembryonic. Thanks!

I believe it is Gedong Gincu from Indonesia/Bali.

Dont think we are talking about the same fruit. I believe the OP is referring to the big ole' tree from Delay Beach that Walter Zill named Apricot. Not sure there is any other factual info available on the parent tree

Does the fruit really have hints of apricot? I love apricots, but no chance for them here.
I am to grow pitombas and maybe Apricot mango.

Maybe it's a Maprang. Slower growing, more sensitive to cold and a ancestor of the mango tree.

Rob, have you seen the original tree? I'm gathering its growth potential is huge, though Alex's site also mentions it's ancient--so there's the possibility it won't get gigantic in my lifetime?

Malia, I think it does have a hint of apricot in the taste--it's in the "West Indies" class of flavor, but has something more to it that makes it really appealing to me.

The picture I saw on tropical acres website looks similar to gedong gincu. I grew up eating gedong gincu, but i never try apricot mango.

Growth habit has only been moderate and canopy somewhat open so far. Fruited in year two (tree is a topwork).

I’m pretty positive it is a Bombay derivative . Flavor is extremely similar and it makes sense given Bombay/ Pairi was one of the Indian mangos available in south Florida 100 years ago.

Spoke to Walter. Tree is located in downtown Delray. As Alex made reference, could be well over 50 years old.

Flavor wise, Walter compared it to the fruit he calls Amy, which is a Jakarta seedling. He said when he tried the fruit from the mother tree, it was "tasty" but he has it topworked on his trees and was not that impressed with it this year

I was referring to a mango variety being sold by John Painter over here in SWFL he has described it as an apricot flavor and used the name "Bali mango". I liked it well enough that I went back this year to try it again. To me, it had some of the spice/resin components I get from Casturi/Kasturi mango.

I wasn't aware of the old variety being harvested on the East Coast of Florida by Walter Zill going by the same name. It very well could be the same as the size and shape are very similar. I like it.

Thanks, Alex and Rob and pineislander, for the additional information. I got the fruit in question from shot's place under the name Apricot (not Bali?) which I guess possibly further confuses things?

So, we are talking about the same mango the problem would be to compare with the "Apricot" of the east coast.
Maybe shot could fill us in on the provenance he has posted about it before.

You should ask him if he got the budwood from Walter, or if not, where his fruit/tree originated.

Click on the link in pineislander's post above...you have your answer. Appears to be different from the Delray Beach sourced fruit.

Apricot is close enough to Bombay in flavor that I think it could make a good alternative to Bombay should it prove more consistently productive in the long run. Bombay doesn’t flower well in south Florida, at least for the last decade or so.

The other Bombay descendants like Emerald and the Jakarta-line don’t come quite as close to mimicking it’s taste.

My take: Through the years a lot of backyard seedling mango trees have been dubbed apricot mango. Same for peach mango. Every year craigslist has peach mangos advertised. This year too>>>

Problem with your theory is that the Delray Apricot does not taste like apricot. The Apricot that fliptop and pineislander are talking about is not a Florida backyard seedling tree.

It seems that it is easier to develop (Zill) mangos with citrus flavors than apricot flavors.
All well and good but Apricot and Peach are getting to be generic names for backyard mangos that a someone likes. I bet if I went to Jamaica or Colombia I would also find lots of "Apricot" and "Peach" mangoes.

I'm not sure it may be a seedling and definitely growing here in Florida. I'll PM Mr. shot but the tree may not be in his inventory. Several of us who have tried it really did find the flavor and scent to be unique.
