Sorry. But try some more?
Mine was pretty sweet with a little tartness.  :)

Yes, I believe it's poly, judging by its resemblance to the manila mango.

How big are these? I get 3 for $1 at the local ethnic market and they look like they're worth about 50 cents each.

That's because it wasn't completely ripe. Wait a 3-4 more days or better, until you start to see some wrinkle on the skin. If the Ataulfo is still firm, it's not ready yet (for most of us, at least).

Anyone in FL curious about how Rosigold or Manilita taste, have an Ataulfo and you'll know.

I can't figure out which mangoes you are bashing here...perhaps all of them.  :o :o

Since I would rate Rosi in the lower tier (yes, it can be super early but I would rather wait till a more worthy variety later in the season), and I am not fond of Ataulfo (if you say it must e "wrinkled" to be ready, then it was either picked way too early or there is seriously something wrong with it), I guess I will just not even search out Manilita.

If you want decent mango from the store than wait until Madam Francis hits Whole Foods in June. As Haiti poorest country in Western Hemisphere people can't afford to spray or fertilize. Those mangoes are naturally organic.

Not bashing them, they just taste very similar to me. I don't really care for any of them though.

And the responses described in this thread just about sum up my experience with supermarket Ataulfos....very hit or miss, with a lot more "miss". I don't bother with them anymore. I'll stick to sapodilla and mamey in the spring.

I buy the Ataulfo mangoes from time to time in the off season just to keep tabs on what's out there.  They have ranged in my experience to reasonably enjoyable to terrible.  On the Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor scale that I often use, the flavor can be from Poor to  almost Good, Fair + might be more accurate.   I find the later season ones are generally better than the early season ones. When there are no other mangoes they can fill the void for most mango eaters....but will always be downed by the mango snobs out there.  Ooops, lost myself there for a moment.....the Ataulfo is a horrible, no taste waste of time mango. Stay a way from it.

seems they are packing them unripe to reach the market...maybe the ripe ones from the tree are good.

Of course they are packing them unripe.  That, combined with the "hot water bath" is never a good thing when looking for a pleasurable outcome of good fruit eating.

I bought six- 5 were decent, for supermarket mangos. 1 was really sour an awful tasting. They were all ripe and a bit wrinkled.

A nice treat nonetheless for an off - season fruit .

Speaking of off season fruits- the south american plums, peaches, grapes, melons etc.. are really bad. I don't bother with them at all.

I bought some absolutely gorgeous nectarines from Costco.  They were hard like a rock for a week.  Then they started to rot without ripening.  I hauled those suckers back to Costco for a refund.  Seems they have been getting a lot of that in recent weeks.

Love costco but their produce needs a lot of work; have had the same issue with a lot of the fruit I've bought from them including the rotting peaches.

I bought 3 "Honey" mangos at my local Publix 3 days ago. I tried the softest one that evening, took one bite and placed it in the compost bucket. I tried the second one just a few moments ago, still very tart, repeat the path to the compost bucket. I'll try the last one in a few more days but I should have waited for a home grown taste, I have Florigon, Edward and Nam Doc Mai that should be ready by the end of April.

We happen to get decent tasting Ataulfos here in Socal. Maybe it's because they are grown in Sinaloa and Michoacan the west coast of Mexico. Here is a pic of a 14 piece box for $7.....the smaller honey/champagne mangos are in a box of 20 piece for $5.
