First ever Cherimoya
« on: May 07, 2023, 08:48:06 PM »
Went to a grocery store in Naples, FL, called Sprouts today and they had Cherimoya in, and we got one. We never had one. Till now.

Maybe not the best example, but it wasn't funky from being overripe. Was on the firm side of soft. It was good, with undertones of pineapple and peach and pear. With nothing else to compare it to, we thought it was okay, but like Sugar Apple and Soursop more. Definitely disagree with Mark Twain, who thought it the most delicious fruit known to men.

I'm gonna have to go grab a few. I've not had a chance to try one yet.

Hi flip top, the Cherimoya in your post was harvested very unripe and ripened poorly.

Please reserve judgement until you taste one that's been perfectly ripened.

Darn I thought you were saying you grew one.  I was gonna say congrats, I still have not succeeded at pollinating mine yet after a few years of half-assed trying.

Brian, you dont need to wait for flowers to open to hand pollinate. Just open it up and add pollen. I had better success this way.

Thanks, I have tried that and wasn't sure if it was productive or harmful.  Good to know it should work

Pollination is a big pain in the ass.  It is usually 100F outside when it needs to get done here so then I neglect doing it.

Yeah it isn't even unpleasant for me I'm just lazy.  If this El Bumpo isn't absolutely amazing I'm replacing it with my Geffner atemoya which is nice and fruits without effort

johnb51, are you saying a perfectly ripened Cherimoya is indeed the most delicious fruit known to man? Definitely makes me want to try again -- perhaps when spaugh offers them, hopefully I will be able to afford them.

A more complete quote I found on the interwebs reads as follows:

“We had an abundance of mangoes, papaias and bananas here, but the pride of the islands, the most delicious fruit known to men, cherimoya, was not in season. It has a soft pulp, like a pawpaw, and is eaten with a spoon.”  (Mark Twain, The Sacramento Daily Union, October 25, 1866, Kilauea, June, 1866.)

I'm guessing the mangos may have been Turpentine? Wonder if a Sugarloaf, Bailey's Marvel, Coconut Cream, or Po Pyu Kalay would have him rethink his assessment?

I dont think its the best fruit but a good one is very nice.  I can tell from your photo that one is kind of over ripe mush.  Fresh ones look bright white and not slick or brown.

I finally got a single fruitlet to set on mine, about the size of an almond now.  Hopefully it survives to maturity
