chiming in to ask if any of the nurseries in socal sell grafted mangos on manilla instead of turpentine. I wanna drive out there soon to buy more tropicals.

I never see them on Manila since they always just buy from FL and FL seems to default to turpentine.

Probably location specific for each home depot but they came and went quickly here a month or two ago and I have not seen any since.

I saw quite a few in Irvine HD (Irvine Blvd/Sand Canyon) last weekend. There are some nurseries which are starting to carry mangoes grafted on Manila root stock. For example, Mimosa Anaheim had Maha Chanok grafted on Manilla last month. Ricardo's nursery in Long Beach also some times has mangoes grafted on Manila.

Thanks for the heads up. Last fall I checked out some nurseries around San Diego. Seems like I should try the LA area.

Was at the Irvine HD (Irvine Blvd/Sand Canyon) earlier today and they still had a bunch of them.  They have bumped up the price and are now they are being sold for almost $50.  Got one and repotted immediately.  Had a great root system.

Is that the manila or just a seedling rootstock of Manila?

I know the last time I bought many seedling rootstocks of Manila and others was at Mimosa nursery in Anaheim. Their price was still good, about $30 each for non-grafted seedling. The grafted mango trees are more, maybe $45-50.

Rootstock. I hear that’s what we want here in CA. Mango do not want to grow for me here in Corona. My neighbor has large Manila trees so I know those will grow. Ny plan is to grow it to a larger size then top work.

ok, then you can buy seedling manila from Mimosa in Anaheim. I bought 4-5 last year, I think it was only $20-25 each. When I go again I will tell you how much.

Thanks for the update! This is a great last resort. I don’t want to pay that much for a rootstock but maybe I will have to…

Certainly expensive for root stocks but this batch is the best I have seen at HD. Many of them had top cut off and had 3-4 branches.  A few had blue rubber bands at top suggesting nursery may have tried to graft on them.

Here is the one I bought.

I put in a bunch of in ground manilla trees and some grafted ones many years ago.  And the in ungrafted ones are large and fruiting now but none of them look that great.  The seedlings from zills types seem to do better and never need to be top worked.  I think you are better off growing CAC or sweet tart seeslings.  Or velencia pride seeds to top work.

Oh interesting, I guess I can try that too for more chances at having mango tree

I did remember that Mimosa had other seedling trees, like Tommy Atkins and one more common one.

Here's their websie info, says sleeved seedling is $20.

I better go buy a few before they run out.

I was just there a few weeks ago.. They had quite a few Kent, manilla, and Tommy in, I believe were 3g containers, that were much larger than the $20 sleeves.

These were $30 each. Brought them home and repotted immediately. The Kent is doing pretty well but the tommy seems to be struggling a bit on the new shoots. Kent is the back one with the 2 larger branches. Tommy is the one in the front with 4 smaller shoots.

The containers in the picture are only 3 gal? They look large. Was a picture in the Manila in there?

I remember when I bought those $20 sleeve one, they are the actual seedling plants for the named variety. The large 3-5 gal pot mangos were grafted with the named variety. So for rootstock the $20 has not graft on it.

When I first got them I believe they had them in either a 3g or a 5g but the container was only filled like half way with soil. The photos are after I repotted them into a different soil mix. I just remember repotting them in a container that was slightly larger than the ones they were sold in. The current photos are either 5g or 7g containers.

The gentleman there did say they were seedlings as well. I didn't really see any potential graft union on any of them either. All the grafted trees i saw  were a lot more expensive.
