Title: Pigmented hybrids from Italy.
Post by: Radoslav on April 20, 2018, 11:43:13 AM
It's time to continue ... http://citrusgrowersstatic.chez.com/web/viewtopicc951.php (http://citrusgrowersstatic.chez.com/web/viewtopicc951.php)

right now, I got two new cultivars (released in 2012).

Sweet SicilyŽ /clementine Comune 2x × Tarocco 4x/
(https://s7.postimg.cc/r589eqzqv/Ibrido_Sweet_Sicily.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/r589eqzqv/)

and

Early SicilyŽ /clementine Oroval 2x × Tarocco 4x/
(https://s7.postimg.cc/j2a33ezpz/Early_Sicily.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/j2a33ezpz/)

both can form an anthocyanic pigmentation, in the form of reddish streaks, caused by cold temperatures, in the pulp.

Mandarossa is the new commercial name of Mandared, a hybrid between Clementine and Tarocco, developed in Acireale in 1985.

No flowers on my plants now, so I am looking forward for the crop from summer flowering.
Description says, that taste resembles mix of tarocco and clementine.

Tangor  "TaCle"

Overripe fruit is quite pigmented. But I'm not very excited. Fruits badly hold on to the plant. The ripe fruit quickly loses its quality

According to info from Council for agricultural research and analysis of the agrarian economy, Centro di Ricerca Olivicoltura, Frutticoltura e Agrumicoltura (CREA-OFA), OTA9 (Sun Red) is still under trials, so not released for nurseries. I hope this year situation will change.

Fruit drop and post harvest decay are well known problems of Tacle cultivar.

First crop of Early SicilyŽ /clementine Oroval 2x × Tarocco 4x/

Weight  of fruits 144-150g.
Easy to peel.
Seedless.
Tastes like sweet navel orange.
According to this article needs several weeks in 5°C to form red pigmentation.

Early Sicily looks very nice, congrats! You say it tastes like a very sweet orange. Is there also enough acidity or not?

I’ve been admiring the Italian pigmented clementines from this nursery.
