Die gopher! Nice picture.  I’m still waiting for my gopher snakes to wake up from their winter nap.  And boy, do I need the help. The gopher problem is overwhelming this year.

Hey Brad, I could use quite a few more pots.  I will text you and buy at a price you feel is fair.

I have a seedling that is a vigorous grower.  I hope it can take full sun when it’s grown past the 5 gallon pot size, probably later this year. This variety does not want to stay in a pot long.  I figured it was too new of an introduction for anyone to have tasted the fruit yet

That’s nothing.  By the end of a full growing season, you won’t even notice it. I’ve done more damage to my trees with failed veneer grafts and they outgrow the injury with no problem.

I think it's impossible, coconut milk can only be made from coconuts.

Stupid AI made me chuckle.  That is correct, coconut milk can only be made from coconuts.  Not mangos.

Nice.  That Sabara is a beast.  Good thing it's in a tote cause you're gonna need a forklift to move that thing around.
My Campo Ramon is about a year behind yours but grows like a beast.  Hard to imagine the trunk fattening up that much in one more year.  And yes, the new foliage makes it a show stopper.  Did you plant it in a garbage can?

I would suggest getting that White sapote out of a pot and into the ground.  I tried pot growing a White Sapote and they quicky outgrow their pots once they get to fruiting size.  They are hassle free trees in the ground that do really well in our climate.  Avocado is another good recommendation based on their growth on slopes.  I have some avocados that are north facing and do just fine with growth and production.

“Everything will be alright”. Oh, that’s good to hear.  I was getting worried that people and our surroundings were significantly impacted by more regular flood and drought.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Varieties for CA Central Coast

Manila seedling mango trees from the big box stores make good enough rootstock, but my Manila tree and another family member’s tree makes stringy, uninspired fruit.  If your wife likes the mangos used at Thai restaurants for sticky rice, they are typically using the yellow Ataulfo aka Champagne mangos you can buy at the grocery store.  I would suggest growing several of those from seed in a pot for the first several years, protecting them, then planting in the ground when they are large enough to handle your winters.  I have grown a lot of these from seed and they are fairly vigorous and disease resistant once they get going.

I also purchased Purple Pearl and Eastern Giant, but didn’t bother labeling.  This picture is after I moved to the greenhouse, but they spent all winter outdoors at the lower end of my property where the mornings are particularly cold.  Even with the additional cold strat, it’s been a chilly March so perhaps that’s slowed down the germination.  There are still a large number of seeds that are still sleeping.

Just noticed that my Yangmei seedlings are popping their heads out of the dirt after a long winters nap. These were the seeds planted from the Weee! local order last July. I just buried them in a bunch of small pots, left them outside, and forgot about them.

Nice!  Did you get the maprang?  If so, would love to hear your impression.  That’s on my list of fruit “not yet tasted”

Do you have commercial nursery experience?

Bold statement.  Here is another one.  All I use is parafilm and my cleft grafts turn out just fine in cherimoya, mango, white sapote, and many others.  I don’t think moisture retention is the problem.  I wrap my grafts at the contact point with parafilm, then wrap again tightly with flagging tape to improve cambium contact.  Voilà

Not a commercial grower. Just a hobbyist farmer and dab hand at grafting with parafilm.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are black and white sapote worth it
« on: February 23, 2024, 08:56:54 PM »
My first crop of white sapote on Suebelle tree was terrible.  The bitter aftertaste overpowered the mild sweetness, so much so that I almost cut it down.  So glad I didn’t.  Every crop has gotten better than the last with virtually no bitterness that I can detect. I’ve been harvesting for the past couple weeks with small fruitlets forming on the next crop and new flowers blowing up everywhere.  It’s a fruit making machine!
Cherimoya is an incredible fruit with a very unique blend of flavors.  I always describe it as a blend of banana, pineapple, and pear with no grit.  My biggest issue with Cherimoya is its insane sweetness.   A peak cherimoya is probably the sweetest fruit I’ve ever tasted and I’ve eaten my fair share of peak CA mangos that are borderline syrup.  With cherimoya, it’s one and done.  The seediness of cherimoya is also mildly annoying.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Eugenia Cross Species Grafting

My Neilta seedling from Kevin Jones is probably the best tropical cherry I’ve eaten.  I had several last year in its first year producing and all were large fruit and excellent flavor.  The Garnet seedling was also a solid fruit, but if memory serves correctly, one level down from Neilta but better than both my in ground Exotica CORG seedlings. I was planning to graft them all (with orange CORG) to my 6ft, in ground seedling CORG that rarely produces a full size fruit. I only get runt fruit with no seeds with the occasional full sized, blah tasting fruit on this tree.

So Orange CORG is not compatible with standard CORG??  Did not expect that.  Would love to hear from others that attempted this cocktail. I was planning to graft my Orange CORG to a mature CORG this spring as a backup and with hope that a diverse pollinator would improve fruit set.

black sapote is trash, its a try once every 5 years to remember how bland it is to eat out of hand and forget about it for another 5.

Adding cream and sweetner makes it ok but if something cant be eaten out of hand i aint got time for that.

I respect that opinion.  Not everyone can have a refined taste  ;)
Certainly, Avocado is not a eat out of hand fruit and absent of sweetness.  Some might even consider it bland.  That said, most would consider it a luxury to eat with each meal.  I definitely got time for that!

Both are worth growing.   Black sapote for its aesthetics alone is worth a spot in the yard.  Year round bright green, glossy leaves and withstands mild frosts make it a winner for SoCA.  The fruit have a rich creaminess with a molasses flavor unique in the fruit world.  Not the sweetest fruit of course, but not every fruit needs to spike my blood sugar.
White sapote is a top tier fruit.  I've tasted flavors from different selections that vary from vanilla custard, to caramel, and even a creamy citrus flavor.  It won't win a head-to-head taste test with a good mango or durian, but still better than most of the other fruits regularly discussed on this forum.  And, it's easy as hell to grow and produces tons of fruit when mature.  The best white sapote easily goes head-to-head with the best cherimoya by my humble, subjective opinion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tropic Pink Guava - anyone growing it?
« on: February 18, 2024, 06:49:46 PM »
I purchased a Tropic Pink guava from Home Depot 6-7 years ago.  The tree is a behemoth and produces more fruit than I know what to do with in late summer. Yellow outside, pink inside when ripe.  Nice tart flavor and insanely aromatic.
I also purchased two tropic white guava trees from Home Depot around the same time. One turned out to be pear shaped, yellow skin and pinkish/orange flesh when ripe.  The other was a true white guava with pretty large round green skinned, white flesh fruit that finish ripening in the spring. Very creamy flesh.  Neither the pinkish orange or white guava fruit have any tartness when ripe.
My guess is that LaVerne nursery is growing these from seed and selling them to Home Depot with the parent names.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Planted My Olosapo
« on: February 16, 2024, 07:25:45 PM »
I, too, got one from abimael777 last July.  It doesn’t look quite as nice as yours, but it survived a few nights in the mid 30s and a lot of nights in the low 40s unprotected. If they don’t make it through the winter here, it’s not worth my time.  This one looks like it’s going to make it and she’s pushing new growth, so maybe it will earn a coveted spot on the property this spring.
Anyone else from SoCA growing Olosapo?

;D  No way that bear breaking your E. repanda was on you 2023 bingo card. In fact, that’s probably the first time that phrase has ever been uttered. Seriously, that’s a shame.  Hopefully it keeps growing and fruiting for you.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Toka Plum in SoCA
« on: January 23, 2024, 05:18:50 PM »
I just cut down another rotten apple tree and my wife wants a high quality plum tree.  Some of my upper Midwest coworkers are really happy with their Toka plum, but I can’t find any information about chill hours.  Does anyone have success with this plum in Southern CA?  I have a couple neighboring Aprium trees that perform well.  My hope is that they will serve as suitable pollinators.
