Citrus General Discussion / High potash or low biuret urea ahead of flowering?

For a while there it was recommended to spray citrus with a low biuret urea about 6-8 weeks ahead of flowering.  But I just read that the nitrogen actually inhibits flowering and a high potash fertilizer is recommended. Has something changed?

I have been away for a while, as all my trees succumbed to winter storms Urri and Elliot and I was slow to replant..

Citrus General Discussion / Freeze damage recovery

I lost all my citrus during the cold spell in mid February here in Houston. There were several days where the temps did not get above 22 Fahrenheit.  It seemed my 25 yr old meiwa kumquat (20 years in the ground) would make it. Started making shoots from the branches within a month but now the new shoots are withering and dying. Is this plant toast?

Citrus General Discussion / Recent cold and impact on local HLB

What do you all think the impact to HLB will be due to the extreme cold?  Most of my citrus trees were killed (Hoping my kumquats made it).  My thoughts are that the asian psyllid population likely took a significant hit.  Also, I had noticed several large citrus trees around here with HLB symptoms (I just took down my 8 year old rio red grapefruit that was diagnosed with it).  With so many citrus trees having been killed in the area, the limited sources of infection could give existing/new trees a breather. That's my gloomy silver lining from having lost so many trees (12, if you don't count my kumquats).

Also, if a tree had HLB and was killed down to the rootstock, presumable any regrowth from the rootstock is infected, correct?

Citrus General Discussion / Wild orange in Texas (Brazos Bend)

Hiking around Brazos Bend State Park around Thanksgiving, I found this orange tree in the woods.  Fruit was very tasty. the size of a baseball, juicy and sweet.  I hope it survived the bitter cold we just went through.  Alligators were out in force as well.  This one was easily 8 feet long.

Citrus General Discussion / Kumquat flavor

How can kumquat flavor vary from one year to the next?  This year my Changshou kumquats have poor flavor.  Tart and juicy inside but the peel lacks the sweetness and the overall flavor is just meh, at best.  Overall not a pleasant flavor.  Its been in the ground tree for 6 years and has been a good producer of good tasting, quality fruit in the past. My Meiwa nearby tastes good so not sure why the Changshou is sub par this year.

Citrus General Discussion / Rio Star GF concern

My inground Rio Star is exhibiting extremely yellow leaves, but only on a few branches on one side of the tree. The other side of the tree is nice dark green. This tree is about 7 years old and is just beginning to really start producing. I have noted the fruit are generally smaller this year but don’t know if whatever is happening to make the leaves look so anemic would influence fruit size. Anyone have insight?

Citrus General Discussion / Disappointed in my Moro blood orange

My 10 yr old, in ground Moro only produced a handful of fruit this year.  Pic is of a just picked orange. Winter has not been that cold but we have had quite a few low 40’s to 60 hi days but as you can see no color at all.  Last year had a fairly large crop from this 18’ tall tree.  Also, rust mites love this tree more than any other of my citrus

Citrus General Discussion / Grapefruit graft on ujukitsu seedling

I will be harvesting some Marsh grapefruit budwood later this winter.  I happen to have a seedling that has sprung up under my ujukitsu tree.  Since I am nor overwhelmingly fond of ujukitsu, I thought to graft the grapefruit onto the seedling and then let it take over at that spot.  Are these compatible, grafting wise, and for good fruit quality?

I have an in ground ujukitsu (planted in '09) that is fairly productive but the fruit quality is only OK. Tastes fine but is seedy and has pretty tough membranes that detract from eating it.  It also tends to get dry spots in the fruit. How much more superior would a New Zealand lemon be for eating out of hand or for juicing? If it is much better, I would consider cutting the ujukitsu down and top working something else on it.  Even cara-cara orange, if it is compatible to the root stock.

I have what looks like a severe rust mite infestation on my Moro blood orange. The interior are good and taste great but outside look horrible.  The satsumas in the same bed a few feet away seem unaffected.  I have had this issue with Meyer lemons and kumquats in years past but not this year.  The blood oranges are always affects as are my ujukitsus, though less so.  This pick is from the last blood oranges I picked last week.
How does one deal with this?

Citrus General Discussion / Kumquat lacking flavor

I have a 15 year old, in ground, meiwa kumquat that is very productive. However it tastes flat, mealy even.  Even back in December.  Is there a cultural aspect I am missing? It gets ample sun and it watered well.  It is fertilized 3 or 4 times a year along with my other citrus.  I recently pruned it so it would get sun to the middle of the tree to let it bush out in the middle rather than get leggy.  My other citrus tasted fine. Here is a pic with the 7 foot fence it is planted next to. I appreciate any comments.  Thanks

Citrus General Discussion / Omari satsuma leaf distress

I noticed my owari satsuma was shedding leaves all of a sudden.  It is planted next to another satsuma of unknown variety and a moro BO that seem unaffected.  What could this be?  Tree is loaded with fruit, sprayed it with the low biuret last week.  Any help identifying this would be appreciated.

I have two pomegranate trees that are 7 or more years old.  Both are vigorous growers and more than 12 feet tall. Both get plenty of sun and are regularly fertilized.   The "Red Silk" variety flowers like gangbusters and sets lots of fruit.  The "Kashmir Blend" variety only moderately flowers and rarely sets fruit. Can someone speak to the lack of performance for the "Kashmir" pom?

I read occasionally in this forum references that say to not put citrus peels in a compost pile.  Is there a reason for this?    Because I have been doing it for years with no bad effect I can see.  Maybe an old wives tale?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hawaii farmers market

I'm planning a trip to the big island this summer and am hearing about the farmers market in Hilo. There also is one on the Kona coast.  For fruit variety which one is better?  Are there better ones to check out?Any unique fruit I can expect to see when I'm there in July/August?

This is a pic of a Moro blood orange picked today.  Last year they were a pretty solid purple by Christmas. Last year it was a lot colder here on the Texas gulf coast than in has been this year (though we had a nice cold snap just before thanksgiving).  So maybe the color is subject to the weather variability from year to year.  The orange tastes pretty good.

Has anyone had favorable results with this technique?  It's designed for more temperate fruits so I do not know how tropicals and citrus perform.  I have a 4x6 foot bed with two blood oranges and two satsumas.   This is their 5th year in the ground and it looks like I will get a pretty good crop from a small space.  I also have a bloomsweet grapefruit and chandler pomelo about two feet from each other,  The grapefruit is more vigorous and is overwhelming the pomelo.  I may have to prune the grapefruit back severely once I harvest the fruit.  Below is a pdf of a power point presentation that lays it out.  I'd like to so hear comments from others about this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Condo" Mangoes

Here I am in Houston Texas without a mango tree.  I am about to take out an "early amber" peach because it is too big to net and the squirrels get all the fruit anyway.  I want to replace it with one of the condo mangoes.  Which ones are the most cold hardy?  Here in zone 9a we dip below freezing a couple time a winter (maybe as cold as 27 degrees, although it got to the low teens back in '89).
