Citrus General Discussion / Meiwa scion died to graft point
« on: February 26, 2023, 01:17:41 PM »
My 3 year old Meiwa started browning and died back to the graft. Never exposed to cold and over wintered in my grow tent since I had it.

Scratching the bark reveals a brown ring at the graft point. The rootstock used is a type of mandarin.

Is this rootstock incompatible? The rootstock looks fine and was pushing buds on the trunk but I rubbed those off before the meiwa totally died back.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Plants for unheated greenhouse
« on: February 10, 2023, 02:27:36 PM »
I am building a small hobby greenhouse, it will be unheated and will have 2 automatic venting windows and perhaps a solar powered fan.

Can I plant a small flying dragon inside with poncirus hybrid grafts and keep it inside all year? Will the temperature extremes in the winter kill the tree? How about a feijoa/pineapple guava.

My concern is with the sun shine in the winter it would bring the greenhouse way above freezing, but then night time plummeting to freezing again  Will this kill the plants long term?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Is this sun scald?
« on: December 28, 2022, 07:39:27 PM »
Some of my hardy citrus have this white almost blistering on the stems. This is the only apparent damage after 5f over the weekend.

Ninkat x poncirus

Prague chimera

Only on the upper leader, lower branches are unaffected. Looks much worse in the picture for some reason lol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava dropped fruit
« on: August 29, 2022, 07:53:14 PM »
Bought a guava labeled as "Mexican" two fruit set in spring, today one fruit dropped while still green, more of a light green.

It was soft and juicy, but 0 sweetness. Tasted like tomato, I thought these are supposed to turn yellow?

Here is the other fruit, hasn't dropped yet

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Lanternfly damage on maypops?

Are these tiny pinholes damage from lanternfly feeding? The only insect I've seen on my maypop vines. Fruit looks fine otherwise

Cold Hardy Citrus / Yuzu coming back from stump
« on: June 10, 2022, 02:23:54 PM »
This is a seedling that survived 2021 mild winter in zone 7a without any protection grew well and developed a thick trunk but died to the ground this year after 6f.

I was cutting dead / rotting trunk that was freeze damaged until only a small stump was left. It's now growing buds on the stump!

I have mature Yuzu in a container now so this plant is not worth protecting as it is a seedling, but thought I would report on this finding. If this was a mature Yuzu on its own roots I'd probably try to protect it.

Anyone else growing Afganski/Russian #26 in 7a? This is the 3rd season for me in NJ, and I don't protect it.

It definitely took some damage from 7f in late winter in the form of burned/dried out buds from last season but to my surprise is now pushing out new buds out along those stems and branches.

Citrus General Discussion / Kumquat fruit ID
« on: February 06, 2022, 04:51:02 PM »
I picked these up from an asian grocery store. They were labeled as "Japanese kumquats" nothing else.

They are not sweet in the middle, although some did have a hint of sweet. They are definitely acidic but not as much as a Nagami...

I don't think they are Meiwa although that was my first guess. I looked at pictures of Marumi but those had a small depression at the base (not as pronounced as a Fukushu) but I also saw pictures of completely round fruit so the pictures online could be misidentified.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Feijoa in NJ zone 7a
« on: January 08, 2022, 04:34:22 PM »
Anyone have success in the northeast?

These are all rooted cuttings from 2 plants that were listed as being 7a hardy (taking it with a grain of salt). Unknown variety, sold by 9Greenbox.

No damage so far with 20f, 16f, 18f over night, daily temps have been above freezing.

Tuesday will be interesting. Looks to be the coldest day and night combo so far

Citrus General Discussion / Grafting citrons
« on: December 14, 2021, 10:00:30 PM »
Long story short my citrus medica "turunji" died of root rot. It appeared like the roots did not grow out of the root ball from when I transplanted it from the container it came in (Logees largest size as a rooted cutting), it was in an almost perfect square shape of the container except wet and rotting, I should have teased the roots out or washed out the nursery soil before potting it back in the summer.

I took some cuttings in hopes that they will root, and grafted some to the only other citron ancestry plant I have (Ponderosa Lemon).

Are citrons compatible with trifoliate? I have a few seedlings but it will be a while before I can graft if my cuttings/grafts survive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help IDing this passiflora variety
« on: October 13, 2021, 02:53:54 PM »
Hello,

I grew the vine on the right from a seed of a grocery store fruit. The seedling showed pronounced red pigment in the veins more so than my other edulis vine from a seed of a different fruit. The flower on the left looks like your typical edulis flower.

My guess is the seed grown vine on the right came from a "possum purple" or "frederick's" variety, my observation based on looking at flowers through google images lol. Maybe it is displaying a mutation for higher anthocyanins (what could cause the red veins and purple stigmas)?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Cold Hardy Citrus / US-1284, SCS rootstocks
« on: April 15, 2021, 08:41:50 PM »
I just received two trees that I ordered in the winter for spring shipping from a nursey in Florida

Has anyone heard of these rootstocks?

Some searching online I found that
The Meiwa is grafted on SCS = Sun Chu Sha mandarin
Are kumquats commonly grafted to mandarins or is the acronym for something else?
It isn't a hybrid with poncirus so I'm not really interested in propagating it.

The Xie Shan is grafted to US-1284= Citrus reticulata Ninkat x P. trifoliata "Gotha Road" a vigorous poncirus type.

I am going to let a bud of the US-1284 grow out and either root it or graft it to my outdoors poncirus (or both!). It seems hardy to 5f /-15c from what I've been reading.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit in upside down planter
« on: April 08, 2021, 02:51:26 PM »
Has anyone tried growing DF in one of these types of planters?

I have a 3 year old plant from mature cutting in a container but it never flowers. It just grows branches and they eventually break or get knocked over so it hasnt grown up the stake and over to hang which is what I've read induces flowering? I live in zone 7a so I have to bring the plant inside anyway so having it grow up and over a trellis is not ideal.

Could I in theory have a branch pointing down to encourage hormones down to the tip and induce flowering?

I will be experimenting with these and report results

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / 1 year growth of potted feijoas
« on: March 10, 2021, 03:35:54 PM »
I am hardening them off now. It's still technically winter in 7a but day temps are above 50s and 60s. Bringing them inside at night.

March 2020

March 2021 from those 2 original plants I now have 6 rooted cuttings to experiment planted in ground around the house.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Spring flowering loquats
« on: January 15, 2021, 12:39:18 AM »
Any truth to these claims? I can't seem to source any of these variety's in stock from online nurseries in the U.S, the couple of nurseries I've found sells grafted plants of Novak variety.

Ideally I'd want them on their own roots in case of complete dieback (zone 7a).

"‘Shambala’ and ‘Novak’ flower repeatedly..."

"Supposedly ‘Tanaka’ starts flowering in spring..."

"‘Rose Anne’ flowers once a year in the spring..."

Cold Hardy Citrus / Hybrids in zone 7a after a low of 12f (-11c)
« on: January 14, 2021, 05:01:41 PM »
These are all 2 year old seedlings with the exception of the Poncirus+ which is grafted onto regular Poncirus. All without any protection, they are all up against a brick wall. So far the lowest temp has been 12f which happened last month, I covered them in fresh snow before that happened. Daily temps have been above freezing all winter which has been mild overall. I don't have any long term goals for the plants. I took cuttings and rooted them before the winter so if they perish which they might I do have backups.

Poncirus+

Citrumelo (noticed these less narrow and more round trifoliate lookin leaves with yellow coloring) no damage aside from some leaf curling

Tai-tri no damage aside from some leaf curling

Yuzu has the most damage but it's still alive. Some leaves have no damage, others are dried up or curled up. Young branch tips turned white (desiccation?)

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Looking for paw paw fruit
« on: September 22, 2020, 08:55:37 PM »
Anyone have paw paws for sale? Do they ship well?

My trees dropped all of their fruit this year so I wasn't able to try any and I am very impatient haha.

I am located in NJ so foraging is not really an option.

USPS priority top loading medium flat rate box is preferred if you are able to ship this way, plus your asking price

Thank you

Cold Hardy Citrus / kishu mandarin x poncirus?
« on: September 10, 2020, 09:57:50 PM »
Has anyone heard of this cross? I know there are already mandarin + poncirus crosses, such as the US 852 but those hybrids ripen in late fall/early winter after heavy frosts that damage fruit in lower zones.

Kishu mandarins (Citrus kinokuni mukakukishu) are very small mandarins which are seedless. The tree bears early, found a blog where someone had ripe fruit in September, so the fruit can ripen in the early fall or sooner, and is still edible when the peels are not fully orange.

It will be a few years, and I am a complete novice don't get me wrong, but I am interested in creating this cross using a better tasting Poncirus+ (I am acquiring this tree from a member of this forum) as the mother to possibly create a cold hardy hybrid tree for zone 7.

Thoughts?

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Looking for Poncirus+

Hello, anyone have or know where I can purchase a Poncirus+ tree (supposed to be less bitter/off tasting than standard poncirus), seedling, seeds, etc in the US?
