Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: jackfruit tap root
« on: March 20, 2024, 09:13:19 PM »
My friends rescue 2 jackfruit with damage tap root. Both died. They are experienced gardeners who rescued many trees and know how to dig out tree. It's very hard to get an entire tap root.

Good luck

I had a Giant Atis once and I'd say it's between AP and PPC taste/growth wise. Nothing special, it has more of the Sugar Apple taste than an Atemoya. It all depends on your fertilization regimen once you have fruit sets, more bloom type required than AP or cherimoyas. Here are photos from the person who gave me the scions and let me sample the fruit in the pix:

Same conclusion I've had. Kind of bland compared to AP2 or Giant Geffner. It isn't "Giant". I'm glad I only dedicate a branch of it instead of the entire tree. I wouldn't grow this variety if I can do it again.

Greenerpasteur, nice job digging up the tree. I'm surprised it didn't have much smaller/finer roots. Looks like that tree had a long fat tap root. Guava trees must be strong to recover with so little roots.

I did something similar when I dug up a 45 yr old Meyer lemon tree, but I had no choice since the tree was planted next to a block wall and had a concrete border on the other side 3 ft away. Most of the large roots of the tree was under the wall or concrete so i ended up cutting them off and what was left on the tree looked like your guava tree.

Guava and citrus is pretty forgiving. They all live. They do have finer roots and the ones I'm able to keep alot of those has a better chance of recovering faster.

Greener, is it truely seedless? How does it compare in taste to a ruby supreme?

They are truly seedless. Not even one seed like Taiwanese seedless. It's crunchy, seedless, sweet and sour. I'm not a fan of mushy seedy variety.

I've rescued 10+ huge 5 years old to 20years old tree with 6-7 inch diameter and they are very hardy. You need to trim the canopy 50-60% of it. Shade it while it's recovering.

Here is a 10+ year old tree dug out and grafted Thai ruby seedless guava to it

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are black and white sapote worth it
« on: February 20, 2024, 11:20:53 AM »
If it's Seattle, then no chance of it being that cheap. In SoCal, it grow very vigorously.

I see alot of gardeners selling it for $2/lb so I don't know if would dedicated a space for it when it's so cheap.

I don't think SplorKeLZ will be finding many local sellers for $2/lb in Seattle :)    Unless it is making it up from CA.    I have never seen white or black sapote in any market in area, even stores that have exotic fruit sections.

I didn't enjoy black sapote. I would try a few before you dedicate a space to it unless you just want to collect.

White sapote was different. It's a very tasty fruit. Remind me of a sweet avocado. I could see myself eating it more often especially as a smoothie.

I heard it's also very low maintenance and productive so that's a plus. I see alot of gardeners selling it for $2/lb so I don't know if would dedicated a space for it when it's so cheap.

Sweetie is not dream

It's pretty Lisa - Dep Lisa . There are supposed to be 4-5 Lisa Mimosa, magnolia, Ong Nursery. Probably taste all the same

Sweetie is dream atemoya.

Our climate in Redlands is similar to Riverside--
Is it better to grow an Atemoya like AP or Geffner, and then possibly graft, or to grow a Cherimoya and then possibly graft?

They are all grafted on cherimoya rootstock.

I do exclusive bark graft from small to very large tree. They do great!

This is my Lisa Pride. 8 months grafts.

I don't think it's worth the trouble if you are in SoCal.

1 take up too much space
2 Mexico imported jackfruit is $0.30/lb when on sale. It's regularly $0.79/lb

I would grow one if I have alot of space for childhood nostalgia. One of my neighbor just got rid a big jackfruit 20 ft tall and producing a few fruits. My two friends also tried digging out two jack fruit from someone and they both died. Jackfruit has a very long taproot.

Here is a farm in Riverside with 10 acre, and 1600 trees

https://youtu.be/yDBZ9uLJFJU

It's in Vietnamese but you can auto translate in English sub.

Most of it is AP, Geffner. I would imagine other variety would do well too.

I just bought the Thai Ruby Seedless. I was able to try the diamond and also liked it alot. The nursery let me try thai ruby, but it was a small fruit slice and I assume taste will be better if it was a bigger fruit. I will grow the diamond from seed.  Between mature diamond and small thai ruby slice, the diamond does taste better.

Is diamond or taiwanese ruby better tasting?

I like Diamond/Crystal and Taiwanese ruby seedless guava because I like sweeter taste. Thai ruby seedless guava is sweet, sour, crunchy and red inside. Completely seedless. It is top 3 IMO.

I'm grafting more Taiwanese ruby seedless guava and Crystal since I have a few Thai ruby seedless guava already.

Can anyone confirm this is Crystal/Diamond guava?

My zone is now 10B but I will continue to grow like 10a. No soursop, sugar apple and star apple for me.

14
Thai ruby seedless guava is good if you like crunchy, sweet and sour.

I like Diamond/Crystal/Queen the most because it's sweeter and Taiwanese ruby seedless guava.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White sapote roots — are they invasive?
« on: January 04, 2024, 12:20:50 PM »
I was able to tried some white sapote from Kaz and it definitely left a good impression on me.. I'm tempted to grow one but they can get very huge. I've seen 2-3 story high sapote in SoCal and block sunlight out of my other trees.

Grow mango, atemoya, seedless guava or white sapote is my dilemnia now.

Mine has round and thick leaves.

Does it look like this?

Grafted tree to a mature rootstock will grow so much faster than airlayer unless you airlayer a huge branch with full of roots. All my grafted tree always dwarf my friends seedless guava that purchased for $200-500 in 7-15 gallon after a year.

I agree to everything Greenerpasteur said.  I love all of them atemoya, cherimoya and guanabana.   They bring back my childhood memories and remembering my grandparents & orchard.  I left my country over 30yrs.  I wasnt allow to go back after they passed away already.

There is a ạ new variety of atemoya that taste like soursop - milky atemoya. I'd graft that variety since atemoya do really well in SoCal. I haven't try the fruit so I can't confirm.

Atemoya is my favorite fruit to grow in SoCal. I have 14 trees and I want more!

18
Cherimoya tastes better, with more palatable texture. We who grow guanabana wish we could grow and fruit cherimoya. If you live in CA, messing with guanabana for fun makes sense, but you have way better options for fruit.

I agree. Cherimoya/atemoya is way better. It also grow like weed in SoCal. So many Hispanic family with 2 story tree.

Soursop for me is good as smoothie with sugar and ice. It's too sour to eat it fresh.

I buy  alot of trees and pot from them. Never have an issue. I also know the owner through a mutual friend. He is a nice and honest guy.

They usually have one of the best prices too.

I have 2 trees. It's so productive and vigorous growing.I have heard there are Taiwanese and Vietnamese variety that get really big similar to an egg and sweet. I don't really care much for the fruit except to grow as rootstock and graft for it later on.

21
Oh, didn't realize it was you Thien, if I have my next Younghan's Gold fruits (have green fruits now) then I can send you a few. All the other varieties right now have just some small fruitlets on the grafts. I will send you a PM when my fruit is ripe.

Thank you.

22
Kaz, if you ever have a few different variety for taste test, I'd love to buy some to try.

Have you try bon bon (lazones)? Is it as good as I remember it?

It's funny apple is priced similar to lazones and crystal guava is so cheap.

One of my favorite memory of VN is buying a bagful of sugar apple. Me and my dad finish the entire bag. We both wished we bought 2 bags. It's that good!

Yea bon bon is the best if you buy it fresh. The Thai variety is very popular at this time, but the season already over end of July. My review bon bon in this video with other fruits. The best tasting guava I came across also in this video.   Sugar apple is the best even they have atemoya there, but most local like sugar apple over the atemoya.

Did you try the velvet tamarind and jamun? Any good?

« on: November 18, 2023, 02:14:11 PM »
I like atemoya and cherimoya for fresh eating but soursop for smoothie. Atemoya is probably my favorite because of the chewiness and more complex flavor.
May I ask which atemoya is better geffner or lisa?

Lisa. Lisa pride if you want bigger size atemoya.
