Do you plan to use it for a tree in a container or in ground? I have never used it for my container trees.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Grafting

I have one but rarely use it because I found it difficult to align the knife so that it cuts in the middle of the branch. I do mostly cleft grafts now.

Please post a photo of a leaf. Sounds like it might be sun scald but I need to see an aflicted leaf to be sure.

Citrus General Discussion / "Perfect" citrus fertilizer.
« on: June 18, 2019, 04:15:00 PM »
I have read on many websites that the best fertilizer to use for citrus is one with a ratio as close as possible to 5:1:3.
Where did this idea come from?
Are there any peer reviewed scientific papers to back this up?
Is it based on the NPK ratios in citrus tissues?
Has anyone actually shown that citrus take up these nutrients in a ratio of 5:1:3?

How much cold can citsuma take?

I took two trifoliate suckers from a rootstock grafted with a Meyer lemon scion and rooted them in water. That was 2 or 3 years ago. They are now in 3 gallon pots and are 4 ft tall. When can I expect them to bear fruit?

The article mentions "a special breathable tarp" that he uses for winter protection. Does anyone know what it is?

Lebmung, do you have evidence that a 13-40-13 fertilizer promotes root growth better than a 5-1-3 fertilizer?

On My 6 I stuck 8 budsticks from CCPP in soil, under one cover to maintain humidity and 80F bottom heat. So far, one (shirokolistvennyi mandarin) has put out a shoot about a week ago.

Yeah, well we in New England have had the opposite: cold and rain until yesterday when it reached into the low 80s for the first time this year. We all have something to gripe about.

How can butterflies cause problems to citrus?

Laaz, now you got me interested in Italian lemons!!

Thank you all for your comments. I have been to the orangery at the Luxembourg gardens and saw that it has a lot of windows and therefore much light. It is the same for other orangeries I have seen online.
Looks like i will have to provide supplemental light. Any ideas about how I might achieve the right balance of light and temperature?

Citrus General Discussion / Can I over winter trees in semi-dark?
« on: May 25, 2019, 10:23:19 AM »
I am about to move to a new home and cannot take my greenhouse with me. I will have only a few areas with plenty of sun and so am considering overwintering them in the basement. However, the basement has few windows and so is rather dark.
Will I be able to successfully over winter them in semi-dark?
At what temperature?

Joe,
What is the youngest (smallest) seedling you have done this on and did it decrease the time to fruiting?

CCPP did not charge me as much as they said they would. I bought 5 budsticks for $115 including shipping.

Why do you find it necessary to use Spinosid and Malathion? Isn't the neem oil sufficient to do the job?

As Brian said, paint the pots white. I would not place them in another pot unless the other pot was white. At any rate, do not fill in the void with anything because the filler will conduct heat from outer pot to inner pot.

Kelley, I cannot get budwood from the National Repository. This is what it says on its website:
The National Plant Germplasm System provides germplasm to support research and education. The Corvallis Genebank can only supply very limited quantities of plant materials and is unable to distribute Germplasm for home gardening.
