CCPP Budwood Price Hike
« on: January 07, 2022, 07:42:23 PM »
Anyone noticed price per bud raised from $1.50 to $5? I know the inflation is bad but I did not expect wood pricing to jump >300%  ;D.

Not that I am complaining but I believe this truly ruined it for me as a hobbyists and encourage people to get woods from neighbors, friends and family members....which spreads the HLB even more.

I remember for out of state people, it was around that cost I believe (~3 years ago). I had to pay over $70 to get 3 varieties. Stopped growing citrus anyway...
Edit: maybe it was $2.50? Can't remember

It was $1.50 per bud when I ordered scions couple months ago and now it is $5 per bud - certainly a big jump. It will certainly have a big impact on people grafting citrus.

Yup, it's way too expensive now for one budwood stick ($30 each). I'm glad I ordered all my varieties years ago and have everything I need. I feel bad for the new grafters trying to start a collection.

Not being a California resident, budwood is even more expensive for me. I stopped ordering budwood from them because I just order trees from nurseries. Price is the same and usually lower than CCPP.

Total agree with Vlad.  Buy a grafted tree from nursery cost around $30, and 6 buds cost $30.  Totally not worth it.

Wow. That's a deal breaker. This is incredibly discouraging for the newer class of citrus hobbyists, like myself, coming up and trying to build our collections.

Beyond other members of the forum, is anyone aware of a trustworthy source of citrus budwood online (not Ebay/Etsy)?

I have 4 varieties,  Meiwa, Fukushu, New Zealand lemonade, Valentine Pomelo.  I have grafted my own buds to different rootstocks.  CCPP is far to expensive.  I  live in Ohio where grafting of non certified citrus wood is legal.  All four of the original tree cultivars were gifts from friends.  Citrus is so difficult to grow up north of the Mandarin - Dekopon line it is not wort purchasing trees of any citrus cultivar.  Grafting is free.  go buy a Seville sour orange and you got seed to seedling to grafted trees to grow.

I remember several years ago the price per bud was $0.75. Then i thought $1.50 was a lot. Now $5 is prohibitive. All its going to do is make people risk grafting budwood from different sources.

Goyo626,

One day, we will think $5 dollars is such a great deal.

I still remeber the day that a dozen of eggs was $0.59 plus a coupon of $0.50, you get it for $0.09.

Everyone's getting old!  How about navel oranges, large box  ~30+ lbs for $5. Shaw and Maroa fruitstand in Fresno.

But then again,  how much does a tank of gasoline cost right now? Car or pickup truck? This "hobby" still is less expensive than a round of golf or a session at the range and most of the time ending up with something good to eat :)

Its not the change. Its the rate at which it has changed. People who might have got into the hobby by buying through ccpp to avoid hlb may now opt to risk budding from questionable stock because the price is too high. Imagine paying $30+ shipping for 6 buds vs free stock from a friends house or a random tree hanging over fence.

Does anyone remember pre hlb quarantine how the crfg scion exchange was in terms of citrus?. I never attended one but i imagine at least 3 tables worth of citrus budwood.

Goyo626,

Even I tried not to think of it, that idea did pop up.

Now that’s an expensive scion! Ridiculous...Is there anyway to treat scions for HLB before sending? Like dipping them in a peroxide solution or something?

For the price of a budwood stick you  can forget going through all the grating procedures, instead just purchase a grafted tree.

Just looked at my history and I paid .75 per bud. They did lower the minimum to 3 buds vs 6. $15 per scion is still a lot. Maybe get with other growers buy a variety at a nursery and chop up that tree and share scions. I was planning on getting more this spring but not at $5 per bud. Thats ridiculous.

Millet,

Maybe someone can set up a side service to sale/ship the buds to where it is not restricted ?

But I will not have the luck to buy it.

Living in a citrus quarantine zone I can't always find the varieties I am looking for at local nurseries and mail order is not permissible.

It just be that time in history that It is time for citrus to go extinct.  It happens to every species ever on this planet.

I wouldn't worry to much about that, citrus can live over 100 years so way after we are dead, then someone else can grow it from seeds.

I doubt citrus, as a genus, will go extinct. There are too many species and varieties with different characteristics and adaptations that will enable at least some citrus to survive. That being said, as much as I love citrus, they do seem to be quite susceptible to disease pressures. Thankfully, since mine are hundreds of miles away from where they are supposed to live, they are also hundreds of miles away from the pests and diseases that want to kill them. They only have to worry about my ineptitude killing them.

I too live close to a thousand mile from citrus growing country.  I am not quite sure citrus growing was worth the costs and labor.  I can say I am getting 74 lemons this year and have no disease pressures as of now.  No need for bud wood.  I can use my own buds and seed grown Seville rootstocks legally here in Ohio.

The calculation of bud wood cost fails to take into basic economics- much less people will buy at $5 per bud. Assuming only 1/10 of the buds will be sold at the new price. won’t the “cost per bud” be $50? They will not be able to recover the cost this way.
