Contest: Largest Loquat Fruit for 2022
« on: April 02, 2022, 05:47:03 AM »
Since there are many loquat lovers who grow many named varieties and some nice seedling trees with large fruits (weight & size), we should post the fruit photo (taken by you in 2022) and post it here.

It would be interesting to see if the Peluche is the eventual winner or if there is some other variety with a larger fruit. You can thin your fruits or give it any special food to get it to have large fruits.

Contest Rules:
1. Photo must be taken of the fruit in 2022.
2. The largest fruit (single fruit) must be shown weighed & measured, take a photo for proof.
3. Loquat fruit can be green, yellow, or orange (any stage of ripeness).
4. Contest will start today and end by July 31, 2022..

Nice contest Kaz! One suggestion- The fruit must not have any stem attached to be fair

Yes, that's a good idea, or the stem should be cut right at the fruit flesh. I see some whopper fruits on my tree, so I hope to take some photos and weigh the fruits in a few weeks. I may need to thin out one of my Peluche fruit cluster to see how large a few fruits can get. Needs to be larger than your 106 gram fruit..

Mine was 106g with 1/2” stem attached.

I live in Florida Panhandle, zone 9a. Loquat does very well here. I would like suggestion for a variety that produces largest sweet loquat with not too many seeds. Is Big Jim a good one ? Please also tell me where I can order it.

Big Jim.
My tree produced only 1/4 of what it did last year. Last year I was eating loquats from this tree from late February into March.
The size of these is an average. There maybe smaller and maybe slightly bigger.

Tlaloc, nice looking Big Jim fruits. I think it is one of the best and most reliable fruiting tree I have. But, I better go outside in the 102F temperature and take a few photos of my other whopper loquat fruits now, they are getting ripe so I can pick it and take a photo before I eat it..

Here's my first entry for 2022.

So far the heaviest fruit weighed 81 grams. There may be a few more that are larger but still not ripe.
1. Picked this fruit on 4-7-22, the variety name is Imperiale, comes from Italy.
2. The largest fruit (single fruit) must be shown weighed = 81 grams.
3. Length of fruit is 2-1/2" long...

Battle of big Jim and big Jim white!

Big Jim wins the size (85g) vs the white (65g), while the white wins the taste. I picked the big Jim too early and they still had too much tartness. It would have been a more fair game if I allows them to ripen a bit more.

Ken,

They look great. Can you post a photo of the Big Jim White fruit cut in half. I have many of the China White loquats and they tastes excellent, it's a keeper for sure.

This is my largest fruit for the year.

Ken, you probably have the largest this year.

My Imperiale fruit came in at 99 grams, tastes excellent.

Ken, thanks for posting the comparison of the Big Jim fruits cut open. The China White is better tasting than either one so you better graft some of this. Send me a PM if you don't have it in your collection. I'm pretty sure the China White will also taste better than the China Doll that I grated recently. Next year I should be able to compare the China White and China Doll fruits.

Hi Kaz, great to know. I have one China white and one China doll graft. The China white is doing better. It seems that I should take some cuttings of CW and make a couple of new grafts

Yes, the China White seems to be a vigorous grower and has large fruit set. I took a few photos today. The fruits are all over ripe now (plan to get seeds). This is from 2 grafted branches that are 2 years old.

I have never seen that cultivar in the trade. How would you describe the taste?
