i had a dekopon seedling that never grew more than about 6 inches total in 2 years.  I fed it the same as all my other trees.  I eventually tossed it when i bought a grafted tree last april.

I agree with Brian.  I re-pot on my schedule.  I will be a little extra careful if the tree is in bloom or flushing growth.   Typically though I try and avoid those periods of time. which for my trees seems to be anytime past march so usually i try for april to june. i have re-potted in Fall with no issues either.  I have never seen a huge set back or lost a tree this way.

I too set my minimum temp in the greenhouse to 55 so at night it almost always falls to that.  My bloom in spring and usually around february is huge.

We have had 26 inches of rain in the last 60 days.  i really regret not having a rain barrel for when we have to long summer stretches of no water.  Tropical storm Bill is dumping a lot on us now.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: limiting tree size
« on: June 18, 2015, 01:47:40 PM »
My tentative plan is to lop off one major limb per year.  I'm not sure how well it will work.
that is a pretty common pruning practice with apple trees.  Any limb 1/3 or larger than the trunk gets pruned. Not sure how well it will work with citrus. You could be the first person to actually compare apples to oranges. :P  I dont know if I would remove whole limbs as much as I would just keep the overall canopy at a certain size.  Im about in the same situation you are as mine are in 15 and 20 gallon pots now and getting heavy.

I enjoyed his videos of the greenhouses.  They have a nice looking place.  Their pricing is bit high for me though.

i have been using a product called Hapi-gro landscapers mix.  Its marketed as a garden amendment.  Its basically pine bark fines. I assume the stuff that is too small to go into the "mulch" bags.  I mix it with coarse perlite in roughly a 5-1 mixture.  I have had pretty good results.  a 2 cubic foot bag cost about $3.  my only complaint is it can get hydrophobic.  Seems most pine bark based mixes will get that way for me.
I need to stock up on it as it seems Lowes is having trouble getting more from the supplier.

how great Citradia.  That is what i hope to try soon.  I want to plant a few inground and see if I can keep them alive.

I watched Morgan Spurlocks show about Bees.  It was very interesting.  I honestly had no idea that there are companies that take bees to the fields.

my very first meyer lemon got cut into 6 wedges and each put into Boulevard wheat long necks

so thinking hypothetically.  If florida had no citrus trees how long would we need to quarantine the state to allow the disease to self eradicate. Say we let California and Texas handle all the loss of citrus production, or at least what they can do while florida produces nothing.  Replant the trees that had to be removed and wait for production to start up again.   5 years? 10 years?  Rinse and repeat for the other producing states.

you know what.  Nothing you can do about it now so why worry.

i imagine a person would have to eat a pretty large amount of them to have that happen.

Well i was a lucky one about 2 years ago this May.  I found 1 seed in a Dekopon and was able to germinate it.  Sadly it isnt very vigorous.  It gets treated just like all my other citrus that are doing well.  It just doesnt want to grow.  This the first winter I put in the house under my lights.

man i must really be missing out on the best then because I thought the Dapple dandy we get here locally are pretty tasty.  I have based a lot of my variety selection off of what the commercial guys grow here and what Oklahoma State university recommends. Starting out I want to give myself the best chance at a harvest then try more unique fruits and newer varities.  OSU says most nectarines dont do as good here as the peaches do.  No idea why thats just what they say. the do recommend a couple varieties.  I love a good nectarine  so I will be trying some just not sure which ones yet.  The selection of trees at the stores right now is not that vast. Plus the way the wholesaler for lowes and homedepot prunes them is atrocious.  Most I have not really heard of before. Of course the only place that gets in DWN trees only gets the boring stuff, LOL. In fact they didnt order any nectarines.  Just superior plum, red haven(which i already have) and reliance peach.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Backyard orchard culture

I am by far an expert in this method of fruit growing but in my opinion it is a very intelligent way to maximize a small space and keep fruit trees in check.
Dave wilson nursery and Tom spellman have some wonderful videos on how to prune and layout a backyard orchard.
https://www.youtube.com/user/DaveWilsonTrees

I have 3 peaches in a row on 4' centers, 3 plum in a row on 4' centers and 3 apples on 8'. None will ever be more than about 7-7 1/2 feet tall.
I hope to add 3-4 more peaches a couple plum and a few apples this year. May not happen that quick though.
this was taken last april. those are my citrus in the pots.
