It looks like a Miguel....which would be possible for this time of the year because of the federal marketing order.

How did you find it's taste?

It's still not ripe yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Muntingia Dropping Flowers

I had a muntingia for a while and during the colder spring the fruit would be very low quality with little set. Once it warmed up it fruited like crazy with good quality.

I have to assume that yours is in a greenhouse, since you're in Indiana?
I have a red and a yellow, both in 15 gallon pots. I forgot to provide shelter last winter, and both died. Still kicking myself for letting them die.
I loved their fruits. I'm in the process of getting another one.

I googled simmonds avocado, and the photos show them to be a bit more oblong and less rounded than this one.

Hi,

I saw it mentioned in a YT growing channel.
It's shipped in a condensed state and expands to 2.5 the size.
Thanks,

Those look like persimmons

Agreed.
Makes me jealous. I've killed 2 trying to plant them in the ground, healthy for maybe a year, then just withered and died.
Think I'll try container this time.

This area of central CA has lots of commercial orchards growing almonds and grapes. This is the only grove with these trees.

Thanks.

Guys,

What about these? This is a potted tree in my yard, unfortunately I lost the plant label. Even easier peel than Gold Nugget, the segments just fall out of the skin. There are 2 seeds per segment.
I put 2 Gold Nuggets in the photo for comparison.
Thanks!

Thanks,

I've seen Golden Nugget randomly at different markets, so this is most likely the answer. The bin was unmarked.
Have never seen Dekopon.

Flat bottom.
Diameter is about 3".
Tastes quite sweet.

Thanks guys,

I see there are some electric machines for $500-$600. I'd pay that instead and not have to hand crank, Lol.
Also of interest are the orange juice machine for about $750+.

Reviving an old thread.
Green Planet Farm doesn't have the juicing machine anymore in eBay.
Has anyone had luck finding an alternative source that's not overseas?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Harvesting Sugar Cane
« on: January 18, 2022, 03:39:17 PM »
A few years ago I bought a short section off ebay that was labeled as black Thai variety. I got a bunch of sugarcane sticks that  grew from that section. Very crunchy and super sweet. Height was about 5'. Winter came, high 30s to low 40s in my area, so I harvested most of the bunch. I left about 4 of them and they survived the cold but never became thick and fully mature like those that I harvested. Spring came and no new growth took place, the survivors were thin and weak. Not sure what I could've done to keep it going. I'm gonna try again this spring.

Do you have to re-propagate sugarcane every spring? Do they regrow/resprout by themselves?
Thanks,

So the consensus is to prevent/kill the beetles from ever getting on the soil surface to lay their eggs, right? Because it's impossible to kill these grubs when they're already hibernating around the root balls. Is there some formulation of powder that you use to sprinkle around the tree?
Thanks,

Thanks guys for the info.
Yes, the soil is soaking wet, will let things dry out.
So are these weevils harmful to the roots? If so, how do I prevent beetles from laying eggs in my potted trees?

Hi,

An LSU fig hasn't looked healthy for a while, so I decided to check out the root ball.
Found these in the soil. Are they harmful to the tree? How did they get in? The branches also have lots of scales and ants are all over the place.
Thanks,

Haha, I'm not that desperate. I can wait until I visit San Diego to contact you.
You mentioned that Ranch 99 has some plants from Green Mart? I used to buy a bunch of stuff from a Green Mart in the city of Orange, but that place closed a few years ago. Is there another Green Mart in your area?
Thanks,

I have an unnamed tree that gives me fruits that are pinkish color, slightly sweet flavor. It was sold as a "Black Pearl" Lol. Now I know it's not. The tree is in ground and is impervious to cold (low 30s)  or heat (100 +), very hardy. Do you know of any So Cal nurseries that has Black Pearl and Thai Jumbo?
Thanks,

Thanks all for your replies.
Unfortunately I don't have access to the tree to get cuttings.
Maybe I'll look to buy one.
The Thai Jumbo looks excellent as well.

I just ate some "Black Pearl" fruits. They're not really black at all, just a deep , dark red.
Will the seed give me what I ate, eventually?
Thanks,
